AFL goes wild for 211cm giant’s rare feat

Collingwood Magpies forward Mason Cox sent AFL fans into a frenzy with a rare feat, which he has only achieved three times before.

AFL: We’ve seen Mason Cox perform in September in years gone by, and he was on fire for Collingwood against the Suns, taking a running bounce en route to an excellent goal.

Collingwood Magpies forward Mason Cox has sent AFL fans into a frenzy with a stunning goal during Monday evening’s victory over the Gold Coast Suns at the Gabba.

After snaring their ninth win of the 2020 season, the Magpies have officially secured a spot in the finals.

Jordan De Goey scored four goals on his return from injury, but everyone was talking about Cox’s stellar feat in the fourth quarter.

Collingwood were ahead by just three points when midfielder Callum Brown booted the footy towards Cox near the 50m line.

The 29-year-old claimed the contested mark, but instead of preparing for the free kick, Cox caught everyone off guard by sprinting towards the posts.

The American giant then pulled off a rare running bounce before punting the Sherrin through the centre posts for his second major of the day.

“He’s contested, he’s competed, he’s taken marks, he’s had a bounce, turned, kicked it on the run — and that is just what the doctor ordered for the Pies.”

Hawthorn great Jordan Lewis replied: “Everything he’s touching, every contest that he’s going to, he’s having a real influence.

In actuality, as revealed by Fox Sports reporter Tom Morris, Cox has only bounced four times before in the AFL, the most recent attempt occurring in Round 14 last year.

Racing presenter Nick Quinn tweeted: “2018 preliminary final Mason Cox is back. Richmond supporters are still convinced that night was just a bad dream.”

The Advocate reporter Alex Fair tweeted: “Tonight has been a very nice reminder of how much fun Mason Cox is to watch when he’s at his very best. The confidence to take that bounce though was something else entirely.”

I love the Mason Cox celebrations and chit chat! Don’t @ me or him. Get around him! Can kick straight!!!

After the final siren, De Goey spoke to Fox Footy about Cox’s unforgettable bounce: “I don’t know if he should do that again. Maybe that’s a one-off, we’ll see.

“He’s a big man, so we don’t ask too much (of him). What we want him to do is make a contest and get the ball to the front and if we can be predictable like that it makes it easier for us other forwards.”

Melbourne legend Garry Lyon also praised Cox on Fox Footy’s On the Couch: “He simplified it tonight.

“His jumping at the ball was much better tonight. He took four contested marks, he kicked two goals, and he provided opportunities for a whole bunch of others.”

Cox ended the 10.8 (68) to 6.10 (46) victory with two goals, eight disposals and seven marks.

Gold Coast forward Alex Sexton snared a hat-trick of goals in the first quarter, while Collingwood midfielder Adam Treloar mustered a game-high 26 disposals.

The Magpies will finish round 17 in sixth spot on the AFL ladder, while the Suns remain down in 14th.

For their final fixtures of the regular season, Gold Coast will take on the Hawthorn Hawks at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon, while Collingwood will face Port Adelaide at the Gabba next Monday evening.

AFL: With the match well and truly in the balance, Gold Coast Sun Nick Holman was smothered by Collingwood’s Jack Crisp and less than a minute later Mason Cox made them pay.
