Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has shared his first thoughts following his long-awaited move to Scottish giants Rangers.
Zungu completed a deadline day move away from Ligue 2 side Amiens on Monday when he signed a season-long loan deal with Steven Gerrard’s outfit, bringing to a head a protracted transfer saga that had spanned nearly two months.
Following the confirmation his transfer, the former Mamelodi Sundowns star shared his pride at joining the record 54-time league winners, and expressed his excitement at the prospect of playing in front of a packed crowd at the Ibrox Stadium once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
« I really want the fans to be proud of my performances and will always give 100% for my new team, » Zungu told the club’s official website.
« Rangers is a global club and I know there are already many supporters across Africa. I am looking forward to playing in front of a big crowd and audiences across the world. »
Zungu’s move to Scotland appeared to be in doubt after Amiens played hardball on their asking price, resulting in a loan deal being agreed, but the 27-year-old was magnanimous towards his parent club following the switch.
« Thank you for everything, » he shared via his Twitter account on Monday evening in response to a courteous farewell post by the French club.
The Bafana Bafana midfielder was back on social media again on Tuesday when he addressed the Rangers fans, sharing his delight at having the opportunity to represent the famous club.
« Good day Gers! I am truly honoured, humbled and blessed to join the club. I am looking forward to helping the team on the pitch. I know that Ibrox won’t be the same without all the fans and I hope to see you there very soon, » he tweeted.

With the Glaswegian side, Zungu will get the opportunity to work under childhood hero Gerrard, who was full of praise for the Duduza-born star following his arrival.
« Bongani fits the profile of player that adds further strength and depth to our midfield. We made it clear that we wanted a player who will enhance our squad and starting XI. We believe Bongani does this, » the former Liverpool captain said.
« We wanted a dominant midfielder with the right profile who can enhance the team and complement other players we have. We have monitored this situation all summer and now feel it’s the right time. »
