The winners at the Riverside tonight will head for Stamford Bridge to face Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in the next round.
Neil Warnock has promised to ring the changes for the visit of the Tykes, and has called on the players coming into the side to « take the bull by the horns » and « give him decisions to make » ahead of the Bournemouth game in the Championship this weekend.
Warnock confirmed Sam Morsy will make his debut, with the midfielder having signed from Wigan last Friday.
Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber also plans to rotate his squad. Both teams went down 1-0 in their opening Championship game of the season at the weekend.
Boro were OK for 20 minutes but have been given the runaround since Barnsley scored opener. Visitors very impressive. So comfortable on the ball. Boro struggling to create openings, a Wing shot from the edge of the area their only effort on target.
Not great from Boro. Little creativity again. Both Barnsley goals were good team moves, but worryingly, Bettinelli was beaten at his near post for both
2-0 to Barnsley. Jordan Williams got in behind Hayden Coulson and beats Marcus Bettinelli at his front post.
Barnsley playing some nice stuff. Very comfortable on the ball. No chances of note for Boro since falling behind.
Good build-up from Barnsley. Schmidt gets it in the box and his effort beats Bettinelli at his near post. Looked like Bettinelli should have been doing better to me.
Barnsley lead. A well worked goal from left to right. Boro had been sucked across and Schmidt had the time and space to pick his spot at the near post.
Neil Warnock will be relatively pleased with what he’s seen so far, from his vantage point higher in the West Stand.
Barnsley are trying to play the ball out from the back and Boro are aggressively pressing high.
« Press, go, go, » Marcus Bettinelli screamed to his attackers at the other end of the pitch just now.
Sam Morsy is playing in the role we expected, just sitting in front of the defence and giving Wing and Tavernier the freedom to roam.
Bright start from Boro. A Bola cross was headed wide by Browne. Then two decent moves lead to Lewis Wing shots – one wide, one saved.
Warnock not in the dugout tonight. He is at the Riverside, but watching the game from higher in the West Stand. Kevin Blackwell in the technical area.
The ex-Boro man is on the move – but not where he expected when he first left Boro
Unlike Boro’s to promotion favourites Watford, however, Barnsley were disappointing in their loss at home to Luton Town.
3-5-1-1 with either Browne or Tavernier just behind Fletcher. 3-5-2 with Browne as a striker is a potential, or a 3-4-3, with both Browne and Tavernier behind Fletcher.
Meanwhile, very interesting that Sol Brynn is the GK named on the bench. Dejan Stojanovic missed the Watford game through illness, with Aynsley Pears on the bench that night.
Boro will stream the game on their website, with passes costing £10, in line with EFL rules.
At his pre-match press conference, Warnock confirmed that Hayden Coulson, Marc Bola, Nathan Wood, Lewis Wing and Marcus Browne will all feature.
« I’d like to see them perform and give me a decision to make. I’d like to see them pushing for a place in the first team.
« I think it’s important for four, five, six players, they come out and show me what they can do.
« I think it will be a great game for me. I don’t usually enjoy watching these games but the Shrewsbury game was important to get the win out of the way. We now have to give quite a few players 90 minutes so they’re ready when we do call on them.
We’ll have plenty of build-up before kick-off though, including team news which will be coming at 5pm.
