EbeneInfo – AU – Andy Murray says Novak Djokovic lacked ‘fight’ in ATP final loss

Andy Murray felt Novak Djokovic was lacking in «  his usual fight’ ‘as he crumbled to a straight sets victory over Daniil Medvedev in the ATP Stage Finals group

Murray, Dunblane’s former World No 1, is in a good position to assess Djokovic – he has faced today’s World No 1 36 times at the tour level – and felt his former nemesis was unwilling to engage in long rallies with the Russian

Following his 6-3 6-3 victory, Medvedev – who impressed Murray with his relentless baseline strike – booked his place in the semi-finals, where he will face Rafael Nadal

Five-time champion Djokovic, however, faces a shootout with Alexander Zverev on Friday afternoon The winner will face Dominic Thiem

Having been disappointed with Djokovic on Wednesday night, Murray insists he will have to seriously improve if he is to have any chance of winning the final edition of this tournament at the O2 Arena

“I watched almost everything The start of the match was brilliant,” Murray said in a Twitch chat with Gael Monfils “Both guys were playing great Lots of long rallies Medvedev was moving so well

‘Novak played a lot at the net last night he started to advance but yeah Medvedev was too solid And Novak around 4-3 in the first set after a long game, once he broke down , I don’t know, he didn’t seem to have had his usual fight

« Medvedev the whole game was super strong He served incredibly well, getting a lot of free points from his serve At one point I think over 50% of his serves were missed, which against Novak is obviously a large number

« Novak was at the net trying to complete the points, he was also trying to use a lot of drop shots which was not that good last night But very, very good performance from Medvedev As I said, Novak started the match well but didn’t end it particularly well «

Murray suggested that Djokovic was looking to ‘conserve energy’, but that was a flawed tactic against someone as strong as Medvedev

« I think Medvedev played really well, I expected it to be a tough game, » Murray added

‘But yeah, it seemed a bit like Novak was saving his energy a bit, like he didn’t want to play so many long rallies after the first set

‘He was trying to finish points at the net, against Medvedev you have to fight and work incredibly hard for every point because he is extremely behind on the return, he puts a lot of returns in play, he is so solid at the end. ‘back that you have to be ready to play long exchanges with him

« It didn’t seem like Novak wanted to do this so much last night I don’t know the exact reasons why but now it’s obviously a knockout for Novak

« We’ll see if he changes his tactics and mindset as the event progresses. It was a great performance from Medvedev but Novak will have to improve if he is to win the event, it is is safe «
