EbeneInfo – AU – Harvey resigns from his leadership to give liberals «  clear air  » ahead of election

Liza Harvey has resigned as Liberal leader of WA as mounting pressure over popularity from Prime Minister Mark McGowan remains in state election

« I feel privileged to have been at the head of this great party and I thank my parliamentary colleagues for the opportunity they have given me to lead the party, » she said in a statement. press release before a Sunday morning press conference

« Given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our community, it has been extremely difficult for our message to resonate

« I stand on the sidelines to give the Liberal Party – with a new leadership team – the opportunity to reset our election strategy and give the public a real choice in the March election

« I am also standing on the sidelines to give our very good candidates the opportunity to be elected as a new generation of MPs representing the Liberal Party »

Ms Harvey said the move would give Liberal candidates, including those who have resigned their posts to run for the party, « clean air »

« These are energetic young men and women who will be strong and hardworking members of their communities, » she said

« To all Western Australians my message is clear When you vote on March 13, remember that you will be voting for a party to rule for the next four years

« Before the start of COVID-19, the Labor government was a government that did nothing Although they did a good job closing the borders initially, the hardest part is getting out of the lockdown It is clear that the Labor government has no plan to deal with this «

Ms Harvey said she would use the 111 days leading up to the election to campaign for re-election to her Scarborough seat

WAtoday has confirmed that shadow treasurer Dean Nalder will raise his hand to replace Ms Harvey at a special meeting in a party hall to be called this week

Party health spokesperson Zak Kirkup is also expected to throw his hat in the ring

Speculation over Ms Harvey’s leadership peaked ahead of the last scheduled meeting of all Liberal politicians in the state ahead of the election two weeks ago

This left Ms Harvey unassailable, with a change likely only if she decided to step down on her own terms

The party has carried out statewide polls in recent weeks, and high-level MPs were briefed at the meeting two weeks ago

Liberal MPs backed Ms. Harvey before the final sitting of Parliament which ended last week

But Darling Range MP Alyssa Hayden said she should stay in charge until the election is over as the party had « no ballot to say otherwise »
