EbeneInfo – AU – Man, around 60, killed ‘in shallow water’ by shark at Broome’s Cable Beach

The fatal shark attack off Broome’s iconic Cable Beach on Sunday was described by locals as a devastating tragedy that happened very quickly

The man, around 60, was swimming north of the Cable Beach rocks in shallow water around 8 a.m.45:00 in the morning when the attack occurred

The owner of the Beach Hut equipment rental, Daryl Roberson, was at the beach on the last day of his shopping season when he heard sirens blaring as several police cars sped towards the beach opposite from Cable Beach Resort and traveled about two kilometers north to get to the waterfront

He said an ambulance followed shortly after but left without any blinking sirens and he later learned it was a fatal shark attack with the shark still roaming the waters

« This is a one-of-a-kind [attack] I think I remember a pearl diver [over] 20 years ago who was killed and we had a few nips here and there from a few reef sharks when people got too close but nothing like it «

He said it was probably a tiger shark, as it was common there, attracted when the offshore winds pulled many small baitfish close to shore. He said a hive of fish activity has been observed in recent days

« There were a lot of schools of fish very close to shore, the bait was everywhere – large schools of mackerel and tuna – and unfortunately where there are big fish the bigger ones follow »

Francesca Rossi, who was at the beach at the time, said she learned the « very sad » news from a local ranger after seeing and hearing police cars swarming the area as a helicopter flew above our heads

« I heard it was a 55 year old man, who was swimming alone and had been bitten in the thigh and lost his hand, but unfortunately died It is very sad «

Premier Mark McGowan said the attack was a « very sad and traumatic situation » and conveyed his condolences to the family of the victim

« This is a traumatic and unexpected event and so I would just like to convey all our thoughts to the people who love the deceased man, » he said

« For those present it was a series of very, very serious events. I thank all those people who tried to save man in the waves

« A very sad day for Broome, a very sad day for her family and no doubt there are a lot of people in mourning right now »

The beach was not supervised by surf lifeguards at the time, with their season ending in early November

A police spokesperson said the victim was collected from the water and treated by local officers before the arrival of paramedics from the St. John Ambulance

« Police can confirm the man died tragically from his injuries, » he said

Shire rangers worked with the Fisheries Department to close Broome Beaches North of the Rocks, Cable Beach and Gantheuame Beach are all closed

The shark is always on the move off the coast of Broome and is being monitored by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development

Surf Life Saving WA Rescue Coordinator Nick Pavy said Broome County contracted rescue services ended at Cable Beach on November 8 and Broome SLSC rescue services earlier in October

« SLSWA is very aware of the effect these types of incidents have on the WA community, » he said.

« Particularly in regional areas where there is a close community network and where the area depends on tourism generally linked to the coastline

« We remind people to choose a supervised beach where they can and swim between the red and yellow flags under the watchful eye of our lifeguards, swim with a friend and always keep an eye out for children around the water «

M Pavy strongly encourages beach goers to visit mybeachcomau and follow @slswa on Twitter for up-to-date information on beach hazards, including shark sightings

It’s barely six weeks since the last fatal shark attack off the WA coast, after surfer Andrew Sharpe went missing at a popular surf spot in Esperance on the state’s south coast on the 9th. October

The authorities believe that Mr. Sharpe was captured by a shark after numerous reports of a sighting at Wylie Beach kelp beds in Esperance

Despite a three-day search, his body was never found. His surfboard and parts of his wetsuit were later recovered
