The skeletal remains of what is believed to be a wealthy man and his male slave fleeing the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago have been discovered in Pompeii, according to archaeological park officials

The partial skeletons were discovered during the excavation of an elegant villa on the outskirts of the ancient Roman city which was destroyed by the eruption in 79 AD

This is the same area where a stable with the remains of three harnessed horses was excavated in 2017

Pompeii officials said the two apparently escaped the first ashfall, then succumbed to a powerful volcanic explosion that took place the next day

The two skeletons were found in a side room along an underground hallway, or passage, known in Roman antiquity as the cryptoporticus, which led to the upper level of the villa

« The victims were probably looking for shelter in the cryptoporticus, in this underground space where they thought they were better protected, » said Massimo Osanna, director of the Pompeii archaeological site:

The remains were found at Civita Giuliana, 700 meters northwest of the center of ancient Pompeii, lying next to each other on their backs in a layer of gray ash at least 2 meters high depth

Casts were created from the entire skeletons, taking advantage of impressions of the shape of victims made in the hardened ashes

Judging by the bones and teeth of the skull, one of the victims was a youngster, probably between the ages of 18 and 25, with a spine with compressed discs

This discovery led archaeologists to hypothesize that the young man was doing manual labor, like that of a slave

The other victim, found nearby, had a sturdy bone structure, especially in his chest area, and was likely between 30 and 40 years old, Pompeii officials said

The two skeletons were found in a hallway, which led to a staircase leading to the upper level of the villa

From the impression of folds of fabric left in the layer of ash, it appeared that the young man was wearing a short, pleated tunic, possibly in wool

The older victim, in addition to wearing a tunic, appeared to have a coat over her left shoulder

« The details of the pose highlight not only the faces, not just the limbs, but the clothes which, with extraordinary drapery, make (the victims) look like statues »

Dario Franceschini, Italian Minister of Culture, said that there are still more than 20 hectares to be excavated in the area

« This extraordinary discovery shows that Pompeii is important in the world not only because of the large number of visitors and tourists, but also because it is an incredible place for research, study and training », a he declared

As excavations continue at the site near Naples, tourists are currently excluded from the archaeological park under national anti-COVID-19 measures
