EbeneInfo – CA – Team Silvernagle dropped out after CURLSASK selected teams for Scotties, Brier

In a surprising decision, Team Silvernagle will not represent Saskatchewan at the national Scotties in 2021

Instead, CURLSASK has hired Sherry Anderson’s team of Saskatoon to represent the province after the cancellation of their provincial playdowns, including the Scotties Women’s Curling Championship, SaskTel Tankard Men’s Championship and the Mixed Doubles Championship

Matt Dunstone’s Regina-based team was also selected on the men’s side, while Mike Armstrong and Ashley Quick’s team was selected on the double side

The selection on the women’s side is controversial, to say the least. Robyn Silvernagle and her team from the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford have been provincial champions for the last two consecutive seasons, 2019 and 2020

But the team saw big changes in the roster ahead of this season as veterans Stefanie Lawton and Kara Thevenot left, only the Skip Silvernagle and Jessie Hunkin returned, and the team picked up Kristen Streifel and Dayna Demers

According to CURLSASK, the fact that both the defending champions had changes in their roster was a major factor in their decision not to simply appoint the defending champions as this year’s provincial representatives

Instead, the provincial representatives were selected based on the performance of the teams in a two-season window that included season end points from the previous season as well as points from this season. The points were calculated based on the currently registered lineups of each team

Based on this calculation, both the Anderson and Dunstone teams are ahead of the game The Armstrong-Quick team has not changed

Selecting provincial officials has never been the preferred option of CURLSASK, who had hoped to host provincial playdowns as usual. In a press release released Thursday, they reported that their proposal for a « bubble » format in the province was approved by the Saskatchewan government on Jan. It was rejected on January 13th that was a day after the province extended the public health order to Jan 29

According to CURLSASK « all possibilities for any form of competition to explain our representatives have been exhausted »

The Saskatchewan representatives are now traveling to Calgary to represent the province in the « bubble » of Curling Canada, which will host the Scotties, Brier and Mixed Doubles championships

« We would like to take this opportunity to convey our best wishes and congratulations to Team Sherry Anderson. We know you will be great representatives of the Scotties National Event in Calgary

« This has been a very challenging year for CURLSASK navigating a pandemic, and we thank you for all your efforts and hard work during this challenging time have not gone unnoticed

As for Team Silvernagle, despite the announcement by CURLSASK, the Scotties’ hopes may not be entirely disappointed with the possibility that the team may still be invited to Calgary as one of the « wild card » entries

This week Curling Canada announced that the number of wildcard entries for the Scotties and Brier has been expanded to three teams instead of just one

Tim Hortons Brier, Matt Dunstone, Saskatchewan, Curling Canada, Sherry Anderson, Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Championship
