Goals from Danny Welbeck and Solly March doomed Aston Villa to their third straight loss at Villa Park, writes Ashley Preece

It was a flat – and frustrated – performance from start to finish from Dean Smith’s Villa, Brighton securing their very first B6 victory in 13 attempts

Villa’s display was chalk and cheese from how they beat Arsenal last time around, with the international break clearly impacting the six players who started against Brighton after representing their respective countries over 10 days

Smith, however, received a heavy blow seconds after the game began when Ross Barkley was forced to injure his hamstrings after hitting a free kick towards goal

Dean Smith felt lost after 2-1 loss to Brighton and criticized Michael Oliver’s latest VAR call for denying his side a penalty

It was Trezeguet who came down inside the box amid the slightest touch from match-winning Solly March, Oliver initially blowing for a penalty

After consulting with Chris Kavanagh, VAR official, Oliver went onscreen before changing his mind to deny Villa a chance to equalize from the penalty spot

Afterwards, Smith remained furious after being promised to speak to Oliver and the match officials – only to have them leave Villa Park before the head coach could speak to them.

« I wanted to see the officials after they said to come in and ask them, but they fell apart before I got there, » Smith raged.

« I don’t think anyone understands what’s going on in the penalty boxes, what is a penalty and what isn’t now. I’m scratching my head »

The Seagulls handed Aston Villa a 2-1 Premier League defeat on Saturday, but only after the Villans saw a penalty decision overturned

Villa kicked in the finals, after Solly March knocked Trezeguet down, but referee Michael Oliver reversed his decision after being asked to consult VAR

« At the last minute or whatever in the game your heart is in your mouth and it would have been hard on the players considering the effort they put into the game

« It seemed like that was a bit of a stretch if I’m being honest and thought Solly (March) had touched the ball but, again, the margins are fine like I said before »

The Chelsea player on loan was forced to leave at the start of Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Brighton at Villa Park

He appeared to damage his hamstring from taking a free kick – and Smith has confirmed he will be sent for a scan of the problem

« He looks pretty optimistic, it won’t be too long but we’ll have to wait and see after this match »

Today’s game host Lineker agreed with Villa boss Dean Smith, saying on Twitter: « Crikey It’s a penalty most weeks May have touched the ball but definitely not a mistake clear and obvious «
