Gary Anderson and James Wade have won numerous major PDC titles between them and the two have launched their candidacy for one of the few to escape them by winning their first group matches in the Darts Grand Slam

The opening day of the action featured eight games in a busy afternoon session, with titles from Anderson, Wade, Glen Durrant and Dimitri Van den Bergh

Duzza was the man to weaken, falling victim to a 5-0 loss to Jermaine Wattimena, but Anderson, Van den Bergh and Wade all started with wins, but in very different ways

In Group B, Gary Anderson punished Adam Gawlas’ failed double darts to begin his own quest for one of the few major titles to elude him, but after his match he launched a bizarre tirade on behind the scenes

The Flying Scotsman is healing a knee injury and has played little since his loss at the World Grand Prix and he was nowhere near his best against the talented Czech who missed seven double darts to allow Anderson to claim a victory of 5-3

But it was after the match that he made headlines, telling reporter Michael Bridge: « It’s good to play darts, you have players growling in your ear every time. that you launch and it always seems to come from the same team, so that gets on your nerves a bit

« Would I retire, » yeah « cause darts ain’t darts anymore You must have a word to everyone who watches darts It’s called the game, I call it cheating

« Ask a lot of players and they don’t say anything I’ll say something If they all sniff, they better take their test again – that’s how I look at it »

In the other group game, Simon Whitlock has played some of the best darts of his life lately, and after a first day off in over a week, he produced an impressive display to beat Ryan Searle 5-3

The Wizard played competitive arrows for nine consecutive days after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals with Australia, then qualifying for the Grand Slam after two hours of sleep the next day

He also played all five of the Winter Series ahead of a late day off Sunday, but he was back on set with a typically impressive display of finishes as he begins his attempt to improve. his status as a triple quarter-finalist

James Wade is a two-time finalist in this event and doesn’t hide the fact that he likes the longer format, but in the quickfire group stage he didn’t go wrong in overcoming awkward Damon Heta in the group F

The Aussie got off to a flying start on the PDC Tour but had no response to Wade’s 102 average which helped him to a 5-2 win over the Aussie

Wade will take on Jermaine Wattimena after shocking a bad Glen Durrant, who keeps coming back after testing positive for coronavirus a few weeks ago

Premier League champion Durrant tweeted about his lack of form and confidence and it showed Wattimena, who took last place after a consistent performance in the Winter Series, has proven too strong with a 5-1 victory

This means that Duzza will take on Heta knowing that a victory could be crucial to keep their hopes alive

A 94 Cross GPA was enough for him to put a dismal winter streak behind him and start impressively with a 5-1 win over Justin Pipe Barring a race to the European Championship final, Voltage has been fine. below his best this year, but he was too strong for The Force

In the other 2014 group game, runner-up Chisnall went down 3-2 to challenge a 97 average and beat Luke Humphries 5-4 in a match that featured 28 double-missed darts, including two for the match in the last stage of Humphries

The afternoon action was rounded off by Group H, where Nathan Aspinall and Dimitri Van den Bergh claimed victory

Former UK Open champion and Premier League runner-up Aspinall has won just one of his previous six matches in two Grand Slam trips and he matched that with a 5-0 demotion from the reigning BDO world champion Wayne Warren

But it was Matchplay World Champion Van den Bergh who stole the show with the first round performance to wow Ricky Evans with the highest average in tournament history

The Belgian only needed 78 darts to beat Evans, and that included that he ran eight darts to a perfect nine-dart leg before wrapping up a 5-1 win with an 11,485 average, improving the note established by Phil Taylor
