Sebastien Haller’s stunning strike doomed winless Sheffield United to another Premier League loss as West Ham climbed into the top half of the table

The Blades, who have lost eight of their nine appearances this season, remain at the bottom of the table as West Ham climb to eighth place

Chris Wilder’s team had started brilliantly and created several openings early on, but the Hammers took control as the hosts disappeared as the attacking force

Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek both had the opportunity to score before Haller’s powerful 20-yard drive found the top right corner

Declan Rice then headed against the crossbar as the visitors looked to assert their advantage

Sheffield United have been rallying, with Oli McBurnie seeing an effort cannon from the left foot retreat to the crossbar, but they still haven’t scored in open play at Bramall Lane this season

« We have earned the right to be here and have to do some things quickly enough to stay there and protect our status as a Premier League club, » said Wilder, whose side were ninth at the same stadium last season

« There is a long way to go Without disrespecting some of the places this football club has had to go, there is no point in taking a step back and feeling sorry for yourself »

With a lonely point on the board, Sheffield United started this contest with the lowest points total at this point in a Premier League season and without a win since July 11

However, while some aspects of this performance appealed to Manager Wilder, they again fell on the wrong side of close competition.

Six of the Blades’ eight losses this season have been by a one-goal margin and on another occasion they might have had a few goals clear before West Ham hit their stride

John Egan’s search pass gave George Baldock a third-minute chance to open the scoring, but the full-back couldn’t beat Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski at the near post

Fabianski then parried McBurnie’s rising half volley to safety in a strong Blades start

But after failing to unlock the door, their two main flaws – a lack of goals and an inability to keep a clean sheet – once again proved the difference

While there were signs they were starting to cope without the injured and influential Jack O’Connell in their defense – limiting the Hammers to just three shots on target – they were punished for a momentary lack of focus who allowed Haller freedom to get his shot under little pressure

After going through a tricky opening spell in the game, Hammers boss David Moyes will have been delighted with how his improving team has grown in stature and confidence.

West Ham have lost only once in their last seven outings and have always looked capable of scoring despite Michail Antonio’s continued absence due to a hamstring injury

Galvanized by England midfielder Rice and his Czech counterpart Soucek, the visitors took control and watched a threat on both flanks

Both were key in putting out the Sheffield United early spark and while not their forte, both will also think they could have capped a great performance with a goal

While Rice was miserable after expertly meeting Aaron Cresswell’s cross from the left, Soucek missed the target by five yards after a nice cushioned header on his way to Haller

Winger Arthur Masuaku’s driving runs were another feature of their game and his inside charge started the move which saw Coufal force a good save from Blades goalie Aaron Ramsdale

Chris Wilder, Sheffield United boss, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: « It’s not the system – it was player confidence and decision making at key moments that decided the result It’ll be like that when you pick up a point in nine games

« We will be back, we have to I am here to lead them and I certainly enjoy this challenge »

West Ham boss David Moyes speaks to BBC Match of the Day: « We were up against a hard-fought team. Clean sheets always give you a chance to win games

« We keep our feet on the ground We know we’re improving and doing a lot of good things The only thing I’ll say is you tend to stare at the table after 10 games and we’ve got off to a good start I would like to think we can get better We work hard every day

« There may be times of the season when we will have to change systems again. I want us to be flexible »

Sheffield United will travel to West Bromwich Albion for their next Premier League game on Saturday 28 November (20:00 GMT)

West Ham will host Aston Villa in their next Premier League game on Monday, November 30 (8 p.m.)
