Buttler is a key performer in the 2019 World Cup victory and holds the record for the fastest ton an English batsman has scored in any format – in a one-day international match against Pakistan in November 2015, only 46 balls were scored needed to reach three numbers

He made his first forays into English cricketer four years earlier, and remembered feeling discouraged about being around established stars before his international bow in a Twenty20 against India

Jos Buttler, right, admitted that he was initially discouraged from sharing a dressing room among established English artists like Stuart Broad (Steven Paston / PA)

Buttler told the BBC’s Don’t Tell Me The Score podcast, which will be released Thursday, « I certainly had fears and this nervous feeling when I started

« I remember very well my T20 debut and when I walked into a locker room with Graeme Swann, Kevin Pietersen and Stuart Broad it was the captain and these guys I’ve been seeing on TV for years

« Then all of a sudden you are in the same locker room and I felt a little out of place, like you shouldn’t really be here, I’m not on the level of these guys I certainly took some time to get into international cricket to get in «

Buttler, who will maintain his position as wicketkeeper for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which begins Thursday morning in Galle, ended the run that brought England their historic World Cup triumph 18 months ago

Initially, he thought that lifting the trophy would give him a new perspective on his career as a cricketer, but realized that what is a career-defining moment for most people hasn’t changed his own mindset

He said, « I think I was probably pretty naive in the sense that once I achieved that goal, I could » run free « for the rest of my career and never have to worry about cricket again

« But as sure as eggs are eggs, the next game I’ll still have the same fears about things. And just because you’re a World Cup winner doesn’t mean you walk on the water and you don’t care, you don’t get those nervous feelings «

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Buttler, Eoin Morgan’s deputy on England’s White Ball teams, has named the skipper who won the World Cup as someone he admires most in the group

Buttler added, « I think he is one of the best at getting emotions out of decisions, listening and thinking logically, then coming to a conclusion and trusting him »
