It happens every year Famous contestant makes sparkling debut in the ballroom Strictly and his life is transformed And we’re not just talking about the beautiful costumes It’s like the famous glitter ball has a magical and hypnotic effect

Good Morning Britain political editor Ranvir Singh, 43, can attest to this. She is one of the lucky ones who, five weeks later, is still living in the star-studded parallel universe of Strictly Come Dancing BBC One On the planet Strictly, you spend your days literally in the hands of a professional dancer, surrounded by glitter

“It’s totally surreal,” said Ranvir “I don’t feel like myself when I’m on stage It takes a while to get used to”

Given that she is already at the top of the table, we think Ranvir might have a few more weeks to get used to – which could take her to the final.

Ranvir – who lives with her eight-year-old son Tushaan, from her marriage to ex-husband Ranjeet, and their new puppy Shmizzles – shares her story Strictly so far

The TV star said: « I feel very, very lucky to be a part of the show But it’s a very special feeling, standing in front of the judges and hearing their comments and their scores. I can’t not believe it’s my life sometimes «

Overlooking his Italian dance partner, with whom his chemistry was even noted by his fellow GMBs, Ranvir gushed: « Giovanni is so amazing, he doesn’t need me to be sensational He sizzles on his own Little doesn’t matter whether I’m in the room or not he goes The dances are all romantic and of course we have to make them convincing

« You have to be up for it when participating in Strictly You can’t do things half-heartedly I admit it doesn’t come easily You have to break down some of your own barriers and do things that may seem embarrassing to you at first

« It’s very intimate », she added « So your face is right in their face It took a little getting used to »

Ranvir, who announced that she had separated from her husband after appearing on the show, says Strictly came at the right time for her

« Sometimes in life you feel like you’re going against the grain And then out of nowhere, something changes and everything works

« If I was hit with the curse it would be a bloody miracle Oh my God that would be hilarious Most dancers were born in 1990 or something like that I’m old enough to be their mother It’s very optimistic and glowing that anyone who thinks I would be curse-stricken «

« I always struggled with body image Before I started Strictly I was a bit yo-yo with my weight and was still on the scales But dancing helped connect me about my body in a new way I haven’t thought about clothes size, calories or my weight in weeks «

« It’s no longer a question of weight, it’s the fact that I feel confident in my skin. I walk differently and I stand differently »

But with the flicker also comes the not-so-glamorous, Ranvir revealed: « There is always pain And I wore slippers under my desk on GMB because the soles of my feet are so sore It’s strictly a extreme physical experience To do it justice you have to go out there and engage in training It’s kind of like Bear Grylls but with glitter and a ballroom You’re also a working single mom

« They say, if you want a job well done ask a busy mom We learned the foxtrot dance in two days I work well under pressure A looming deadline can make some people sick and nervous, but I m ‘thrilled in this situation Don’t get me wrong, there is an element of dread and nerves right before you go on stage But the difference is it doesn’t make me shrink into a little ball, it gives me the power to get up

« I can handle this, it’s my job – present on live TV At least I could bring this to the table, because other than that I had nothing else to offer Giovanni, poor type «
