Liza Harvey has resigned as leader of the opposition in Western Australia as state liberals desperately try to avert disaster in March election

This comes after months of dismal voting for the party, which has already been reduced to just 13 of the 59 seats in the lower house

In a statement sent to Liberal MPs on Sunday, less than four months before polling day, Ms Harvey said she was stepping down to « clear the air » for party candidates

« Given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our community, it has been extremely difficult for our message to resonate, » she wrote

« I’m standing on the sidelines to give the Liberal Party – with a new leadership team – the opportunity to reset our election strategy and give the public a real choice in the March election »

Ms Harvey declined to answer questions in a brief media appearance, but said she intended to stay in parliament

« While they did a good job closing the borders initially, the hardest part is getting out of the lockdown Clearly the Labor government has no plan to deal with this

« I will use the next 111 days to campaign for re-election to my Scarborough seat and hope to become a prominent member of a future Liberal government »

Prime Minister Mark McGowan’s approval ratings have reached record levels in recent months, with his tough border closures and isolationist rhetoric proving hugely popular with voters

His Labor government is widely expected to win a second term and aim for other fringe Liberal seats after a landslide victory in 2017

Opposition Treasury spokesman Dean Nalder and health spokesperson Zak Kirkup could replace Ms Harvey, though Mr Kirkup in Dawesville is among those at risk of tipping over to Labor

A decision on the direction is expected to be made at a meeting in the village hall on Wednesday

M McGowan, who served five and a half years as a Labor leader before becoming prime minister, said the role of Leader of the Opposition was very difficult

In an overview of the Labor Party campaign strategy, Mr. McGowan said besieged Liberals were unfit to govern during pandemic

« They are very unstable, they are inexperienced and they are risky, and this state does not need them at the moment, » he said.
