For the first time in four years, Chevrolet has a driver in the fight for the NASCAR Cup Series championship before the final

Chase Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports to represent Bowtie Elliott qualified for his first Championship 4 appearance with a dramatic and moving victory last weekend at Martinsville Speedway He is the first Chevy driver in the last four since Jimmie Johnson in 2016 – the year he won his seventh and final championship

“We’ve had these OEM press conferences for many years, and it’s definitely more fun when you have a Chevy in the final,” said Jim Campbell, vice president of performance and motorsport at Chevrolet. something from our history that we’re used to, so it’s great to be back

« It’s tough to win a race, and to see Chase have a year where he’s won four times, and he won in a clutch moment in the round of 16 at Martinsville, just an amazing race It could have been go any way, and we’re so proud of him and Alan and all of Hendrick’s team So super excited I think it’s gonna be – these four drivers are just incredibly talented It’s gonna be a shootout absolute «

Three Chevrolet drivers advanced to the round of 16 with Elliott, Alex Bowman and Kurt Busch However, all three were below the cut line at Martinsville and had to win the race Elliott could have mathematically advanced in points to from the day but the way the race went in the first two stages he ended up having to win

“They ride high, feel good,” Rick Hendrick said on the No 9 team “We have incredible competition here with both Roger’s cars and Joe’s car We know we have to be at our best Au the less chance we have It’s good to be back in the ball game «

Chevrolet has won eight races this season, four courtesy of Elliott Bowman, Kurt Busch, William Byron and Austin Dillon also toured the victory lane and all of them advanced to the playoffs

« For me, yeah, I think it’s important, » said Gustafson of having a Chevy in the championship. « It’s always important That’s what we do. just felt like we were on the right track for so many years for the last three or so years, we had to push the limits You keep swinging against them, keep swinging against them, finally hit one

« I think it was about time, and certainly there was a certain urgency on Mr. Hendrick and Chevrolet that we were to be represented in the championship I would say that every year is important, but certainly the one you are in is the most «

Said Jeff Andrews, competition management at Hendrick Motorsports, « We have always made it to the Round of 16, but going over that point and qualifying for the Round of 16 has been very important for Mr. Royce and Jim Campbell and everyone at Chevrolet, to get a car in Phoenix and compete for a championship We were excited to do this and be a part of it for them

“And certainly, as part of a great overall effort from Chevrolet here over the past couple of years to bring these teams together, especially the Childress and Hendrick and Ganassi groups, getting everyone to work together on different initiatives, different projects, talking to each other I think what has happened here over the last eight or nine weeks has been the culmination of it We have worked a lot together to achieve this goal of bringing a car in Phoenix «

Andrew said everyone left the season finale last year very disappointed, and Hendrick let everyone know he was unhappy It was one of the worst years for the organization for quite some time from a final position, with Elliott the best driver Hendrick in 10th place in the standings

« I don’t mean that there is nothing worse but going out there and not being a part of it, it’s just a whole different feeling after being a part of it for so many years « Said Andrews » To put (Rick Hendrick) back in the middle of this, we’re terribly proud

« He’s excited He’s bloated We’re happy to go to Phoenix and fight for him for (the title) »
