Former Portsmouth boss Paul Cook believes ‘a consolidation season would be great’ for Plymouth Argyle in League One this season.

Cook, who left Wigan Athletic earlier this summer after they were plunged into administration, also praised Ryan Lowe for the ‘fantastic job’ his fellow Liverpudlian.

He made his comments when he was a guest on EFL on Quest, the highlights show on Saturday night.

Cook spoke to show host Colin Murray about Argyle after a section of the programme which included Argyle’s 1-0 League One season-opening win against Blackpool at Home Park.

Luke Jephcott’s third minute goal was shown, as well as a couple of saves from Argyle goalkeeper Mike Cooper.

Cook said: “I think Ryan has done a fantastic job, when you’ve been promoted you go into a new division with great optimism.

« You don’t want to set yourself targets in case they’re too low or too high. I think playing each game as it comes and seeing where they are after 10-12 games – a consolidation season, would be great.

Cook, of course, was the manager of Portsmouth when they lost to Argyle in the League Two Play-Off Semi-Finals in 2015/16.

He and former Pilgrims’ boss Derek Adams developed quite a rivalry over that period of time.
