Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world
Juventus’ Champions League hopes hang in the balance on Friday as the Italian giants welcome Lyon to Turin for their round of 16 second leg. The first leg back in March ended with a shock 1-0 win for Lyon despite Juventus looking like the strong side. Now Juve faces a must-win match with Paulo Dybala’s status up in the air. Just one goal for Lyon means Juve will have to score three to advance.

Two less-than-stellar penalty calls are what got each team on the board. Juventus are still chasing their French opponents, as they need two more goals to take the lead on aggregate.

44′ Betancur with a silly challenge outside of the box. He is given a yellow card and even gets into it with Toko Ekambi, who he fouled, afterwards. The ensuing Lyon free kick gets into the box, but play is called off when Bonnuci was fouled in the air.
43′ Ronaldo with a concentrated shot to the right of Lopes scores and suddenly gives his team a chance in this tie!
« Was there any doubt?! » Cristiano Ronaldo converts from the spot to put @juventusfcen on the board 😤 pic.twitter.com/bf4IpamnW5
43′ | 🔥 | GOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!! @CRISTIANO FIRES IN FROM THE SPOT!!!! KEEP GOING BOYS!!!#JuveOL [1-1] #JuveUCL pic.twitter.com/uys63Lc0fe
42′ Absolute scenes!! Memphis Depay, who was in the box, is given a yellow card for handball, but the replay shows his arm is at his side and in no way attempting to stop the ball. A rather dubious call, but it wouldn’t be the first in this game. The penalty is given to Juventus.
41′ Bruno Guimarães tries to get out of Ronaldo’s way but the veteran forward is too crafty to not draw a foul outside of the box. Another dangerous free kick given with Pjanic taking it this time.
40′ | 🔥 | SO CLOSE FROM @CRISTIANO ON THE FREE-KICK! LOPES JUST MAKES THE SAVE!#JuveOL [0-1] #JuveUCL pic.twitter.com/BqgXH5Eh3X
39′ Ronaldo goes for the shot and wow did it look like a beautiful shot. It was on target, had the necessary pace, but Lopes was able to fling himself across goal to make the save for his club.
38′ Léo Dubois clumsily fouls Betancur just outside of the box and Juventus are gifted another dangerous free kick. Also Dubois is carded.
37′ Close one for Juventus! Cuadrado launches a cross from far out to Gonzalo Higuain, who tries to head a shot on goal from inside the box, but he’s unable to get enough power on it to pass Anthony Lopes. Still, it’s enough to trouble the keeper and force a scrappy save that Ronaldo was nearly able to get a foot on.
36′ Ronaldo drills his free kick low and into the two man wall that Lyon had set up.
35′ Free kick in a dangerous area for Juventus. Rabio gets nicked by Maxence Caqueret, who’s trying to go for the ball but misses his target.
32′ It’s worth noting that Juventus have had plenty of runs towards goal but on the final pass, the player the ball is intended for seems to constantly get caught offside. Ronaldo has drawn a couple offside flags and now it’s Rabiot getting in on the action.
31′ Juan Cuadrado hit with a yellow card after tripping Aouar who was making a run towards the ball.
29′ Theatrics aren’t exclusive to Juventus, as Lyon’s Depay goes rolling a few times after getting hit in the air. It’s not like he wasn’t hit hard, but the ferocity of the reaction seemed to surpass the ferocity of the hit itself.
26′ We have reached our first « cooling break. » Broadcast references the high temperatures in the stadium right now making this kind of pause necessary.
25′ Ronaldo goes down rather easily in the box while searching for a cross. There was contact made, but perhaps his theatrics helped the referee swallow his whistle.
20′ | 😱 | LAST DITCH TACKLE TO DENY BERNARDESCHI! Brilliant dribble there from @fbernardeschi! #JuveOL [0-1] #JuveUCL pic.twitter.com/U0fyx5oQ4r
20′ WOW and Juve nearly gets on the board! A brilliant run from Bernardeschi gets the goalkeeper out of position and he seemed to have an easy shot on goal. But a last minute tackle from Lyon’s Marcelo, and some hesitation on the Juve man’s part, knocks the ball out of play before it can cross the goal line.
19′ We’ve got the first booking of the match. Yellow card given to Houssem Aouar for unsportsmanlike conduct of kicking the ball away. Cheap foul, really.
Questions are being asked, naturally, of what Becantur could have done differently in that tackle. He got the ball first and got to the spot first, but the ensuing follow through tripped up the Lyon player. Juventus will need to put the call behind them, but it’s hard to imagine they won’t feel like that was a penalty that shouldn’t have been called.
A lovely penalty from Memphis Depay who does a panenka chip down the middle as cooly as you could possibly like. Lyon not only lead in the game, but doubles their lead on aggregate.
Calm. Cool. Collected.Memphis Depay with the cheeky panenka to help @OL_English extend their lead to 2-0 on aggregate over Juventus 👀 pic.twitter.com/JfDsM7mFLL
11′ PENALTY! Aouar tackled in the box by Becantur and all look at the ref who points at the spot. A VAR check confirms the position and the French side has a chance to take a commanding lead on away goals!
10′ And a chance for Lyon on the other end. Houssem Aouar fires a shot from outside the box after his squad gets in a good build up. The shot looked to be going wide but Szczesny needed to make the save anyway. Unfortunately the ensuing corner kick was absolute garbage and petered out into nothing.
9′ | 🤚 | GREAT EARLY SAVE FROM TEK! Big hand to deny Lyon on the volley.#JuveOL [0-0] #JuveUCL
