The beach at Chidley Point on the opposite side of the river from Blackwall Reach was closed by authorities on Thursday afternoon in addition to the closure of the area between Bicton Baths and Point Walter

Fisheries Department officials plan to continue water patrols until sunset and land patrols until late at night. They will start again on Friday morning

A spokesman for the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development said drumlines would not be used to catch the shark that attacked Mr Wrathall

The spokesman said Blackwall Reach is a narrow stretch of the river with a lot of shipping traffic

« Bull sharks are drawn to freshwater rivers and estuaries in order to reproduce Based on scientific advice, relocation would not improve the risk of shark hazards, « said the spokesman

Mr Wrathall was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after being bitten around 8 a.m. He was taken to the theater at 9:30 a.m. Doctors at the time said they did not believe his injuries were life threatening

He is no longer operated on and is in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit

A local resident told WAtoday that he heard screams from Blackwall Reach in the southern suburb of Bicton on the riverside just before 8 a.m.

He said kayakers paddled out to see Mr. Wrathall and would have brought him ashore with the help of a stand-up paddleboarder

David Davenport, who lives in Bicton, was on his deck overlooking the Swan River when he saw two swimmers splashing near a boat

« I thought ‘someone jumped off their backs’ and after a while the splash stopped and they swam ashore and I could see the trail of blood from the one guy, » he said

« I called my son and told him to come over here, and I called the ambulance when they were swimming ashore »

Mr Davenport said seven or eight people carried Mr Wrathall, who is known among friends as a regular morning swimmer in the river

Mr Davenport said he was amazed at the amount of blood that had come out of the float, but when he got to the bank the rescuers stopped the bleeding

« I was told they took off his shirt and used it as a tourniquet, » he said

Mr Davenport said he had time to consider whether his view of swimming in the river had changed

« It’s a risk you take every time the last bull shark was here? It was decades ago, » he said

Another witness said it looked like a lot of blood and a « fair chunk » of the man’s thigh had disappeared

« It’s not something anyone would have expected because [a shark attack in the Swan River] hasn’t happened in 50 years, » he said

« We all hope and wish the best to the man involved and hope that he makes a full recovery »

The only fatal bull shark attack in the Swan River occurred in 1923 when a 13-year-old boy was bitten on the thigh while swimming near Mosman Park

Blackwall Reach is the name of the limestone cliffs that connect Bicton’s « Millionaires Row » – Blackwall Reach Parade – to Point Walter Reserve, about 10 kilometers from where the Swan River meets the ocean in Fremantle

It includes the iconic Bicton Baths and Kent Street Jetty, and is an area popular with swimmers, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders
