Level Info – CA – International students who fail to meet Canadian work experience requirements are given another chance

International students who have not been able to meet the Canadian requirements for work experience for their PGWP can apply for a new one

The Canadian government announced today, Jan. January 2021, introduced a new policy that allows international students with an expired or expired Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP) to apply for a new open work permit

The new permits are valid for 18 months and allow former international students to stay in Canada and continue seeking work

To apply for an open work permit according to the new directive, the following criteria must be met:

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has estimated that 52000 graduates with expired or expired PGWP could benefit from this public policy

About half of the 61000 PGWP holders whose work permits expired between January and December 2020 are, according to the IRCC, already permanent residents or have an application for permanent residence in process

International students who have completed their post-secondary education in Canada can apply for a PGWP, which allows them to gain professional experience in Canada for a maximum of three years after their studies

The Government of Canada offers the PGWP program as part of their efforts to attract international students and retain them as skilled workers. PGWP holders can leverage all of their years of Canadian experience to submit an immigration application

The PGWP is very popular with international students as surveys show that around 60 percent want a transition to permanent Canada residency. The PGWP allows them to frequently gain professional Canadian work experience to qualify for a skilled worker immigration route Gain experience and then submit a skilled worker immigration application to Express Entry, Quebec Experience Program, Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), and many other streams that reward candidates with Canadian work experience

Canada recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has put 2019 and 2020 graduates at a disadvantage due to the weakened job market. Significant number of international graduates have been laid off as a result, having found it difficult for them to meet Canadian PGWP work experience requirements to meet

The new policy will help « more graduates meet urgent needs in areas such as healthcare, technology and more, » said an IRCC press release

« As we face the second wave of the pandemic and set a course for our recovery, attracting skilled immigrants is a central part of our plan »

While the long-term effects of COVID-19 on international students are still difficult to gauge, it is widely recognized that their participation is critical to the country’s economic vitality

International students contribute to the local economy while studying in Canada and provide a large pool of highly skilled people who can become permanent residents and contribute to the workforce

Almost a third of international undergraduate Canadian students and nearly half of international Masters graduate students became permanent residents for the ten years after receiving their first study permit
