Level Info – CA – Jyoti Gondek announces a run for the mayor who has committed to take the middle route

Ward 3 town council is entering an increasingly crowded mayor race that includes Ward 11 Coun Jeromy Farkas

The Ward 3 representative announced her intention to run on Wednesday and became the second seated councilor to say she would seek to chair the mayor Ward 11 Coun Jeromy Farkas announced his mayoral campaign in September, more than a year before the upcoming vote in 2021

Gondek and Farkas are both first term councilors, two of four new faces that arrived at City Hall in 2017.Before Gondek was elected, she taught at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. She also sat on the Calgary Planning Commission and was former Coun Jim Stevensons Campaign Manager

After her victory in 2017, Gondek described itself as « completely centrist » and said that a left-right divide in the council prevented people from working together

« I think more than ever that I understand that I am a person who believes that it is right to strike the middle ground, » she said

« I think what we see in our politics – not just in our city, our province and our nation – is global, that people want you to take one ideological side far to one side or the other, and I don’t think so that this was for the benefit of society ”

On the council, Gondek has advocated more resources and infrastructure for north-central Calgary, urging the city to address cross-cutting issues with the property tax system rather than repeatedly using one-off funds to cover the problem

Gondek was also recently a vocal critic of the United Conservative Government in Alberta as it publicly announced its disapproval on social media about parts of the province’s pandemic response, the uncertainty about the UCP’s commitment to funding the Green Line LRT project and the province’s takeover of EMS shipping services in Calgary

The greatest achievement by @Alberta_UCP will be the way they unite the communities in Alberta against them Urban & rural, standing together in the face of fraud, lies and claim Truly an accomplishment I would not have imagined 2 years ago can

« One of the things I have to do on behalf of my constituents is hold other government orders accountable for doing things that are harmful to us, » said Gondek

« So if I use my voice as an elected official to speak for Calgarians, I think that is a good thing »

It is still unclear whether there will be an open race for the mayor in the 2021 elections Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who has been in office since 2010, said he had not decided whether he would run for a fourth term

Several Calgarians have announced they are running for mayor, but so far only Farkas and Brad Field, a local businessman, have submitted nomination papers to make things official

On Wednesday, former Kerby Center president Zane Novak also announced plans to run for mayor, saying the town hall is currently « lacking strong leadership »

He also questioned plans for the Green Line, saying he feared it could « drive billions of dollars in costs » and jeopardize future infrastructure plans

The local elections are scheduled for October 18, and there is still a long way to go before the Calgarians have their votes candidates have by Sept. 8 p.m. to submit their nomination papers, and the official list of candidates could change by then

Gondek said she has been seriously considering a mayoral run since the fall and has not based her decision on what the field might look like or whether she will face an incumbent

Calgary has never had a mayor, but « gender, gender, race didn’t count on the decision (to run for me), » said Gondek

« For me it was important whether I had enough skills to run this city and I think so »

Candidates for mayor and councilorships have crept in in Calgary since the beginning of the year Ward 13 Coun Diane Colley-Urquhart and Ward 4 Coun Sean Chu have both officially submitted papers to begin their re-election proposals

Most of the other councilors have not publicly announced their intentions, but with two councilors now looking for the mayor, there will be at least four open races this year

Ward 10 Free After Coun Ray Jones resigned last year and Ward 12 Coun Shane Keating said last summer that he would not seek re-election
