Update for 12:37 pm EST: Blue Origin’s New Shepard has successfully launched the NS-14 mission Our wrap will be released shortly

« Mannequin Skywalker » will be released on Thursday (Jan 14) as part of a big test for Blue Origin’s burgeoning space program – and you can watch the event live

The Company’s New Shepard rocket and space capsule are expected to take off at 10:45 am EST (9:45 am local time or 1545 GMT) from the Company’s West Texas facility to evaluate upgrades to the crew capsule’s performance see it live here on spacecom, courtesy of Blue Origin, or directly through the company’s website here. Coverage will begin 30 minutes prior to launch and the company will provide live updates on Twitter

The name of the mannequin on board is an obvious piece by Anakin Skywalker, the name a young Darth Vader used in the 1999-2005 prequel films « Star Wars » – the franchise films that made up much of the Blue Origin teams probably saw them growing up

But the mission ahead is far from science fiction as the company is ready to send paying tourists into space The company has yet to announce a flight date to send people up in the air or even sell tickets, but Blue Origin is already thinking about the customer experience

« The upgrades for [spacecraft] include improvements to environmental features such as acoustics and temperature controls in the capsule, crew scoreboards, and speakers with a microphone and a push-to-talk button on each seat, » Blue Origin said in a statement by email to Spacecom « The mission will also test a range of communication and security alert systems for astronauts. The capsule will have six seats, one of which is occupied by Mannequin Skywalker »

Blue Origin’s nonprofit Club for the Future also plans to turn 50000 student postcards to fly into space, some of which are in Mannequin Skywalker’s pockets. This is the third batch of student postcards to take part in a space flight and students can join future missions at this link

Blue Origin’s latest New Shepard test flight (NS-13) took place in October and also included a flawless vertical landing for the reusable rocket that New Shepard sent into space

The company was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, to send commercial passengers to suborbital space A successor spacecraft called the New Glenn is also in development for orbital flights In December, NASA added New Glenn to its list of potential missiles to be used for future missions
