At the Cherryville Community Food Bank, the holidays really are the best time of the year, and volunteers have worked overtime to keep it going despite the coronavirus pandemic
« We have little angels that are being adopted and each angel represents a child and on that angel their needs are their needs, » said Sharon Harvey, president of the Cherryville Food Bank Society
« If you need socks and coats, this is there If they want a barbie, he’s there. Then the angels are adopted ”
Last year almost all 40 angels were adopted and Christmas wishes fulfilled
The holidays add to the pressure that small grocery bank volunteers are already putting on as customers soar during the pandemic
« We grew from an average of 19 families to 20 to an average of 30 (more) families and are a small little community, » said Harvey
« Communities need to help communities, we can’t do this alone It’s too big a job and problem in our society Nobody should go to bed hungry »
Harvey and her team are preparing for at least a 30 percent year-over-year increase in vacation baskets, and this extra help to families makes all the difference for client and volunteer Manda Harrob this time of year
« The food bank for me personally gives me a sense of comfort that they are there to help when I struggle, » said Harrob
Harrob is now helping the grocery bank with their seniors’ meal program, a drive-through service where seniors can pick up a hot meal and put the other in the freezer for later
« Everyone needs help and the humility to be able to ask for that help from the people who want to help you, » said Harrob. « Right now we are all fighting, but there is help for you »
