Brazilian Denilson was signed by Arsene Wenger for £ 3-4 million in 2006 when he was just 18 and made more than 150 appearances for Arsenal but struggled with life off the field

Former Arsenal star Denilson has opened up to the heartbreaking loneliness he suffered during his time for the Gunners that ruined his time at the club

The Brazilian midfielder moved from Sao Paolo to England in 2006 at the age of 18 and immediately fought for a spot on Arsene Wenger’s first team

Although Denilson wasn’t seen as a regular starter, he was heavily represented in his first season in Arsenal’s League Cup campaign, playing ten Premier League games

Despite the recognition from Gunners fans, Denilson faced an entirely different challenge out of the spotlight

« Going home after training was fine, but after a game I was just before 60000 fans cheered me on, « said Denilson, recalling FourFourTwo. » I would shower in the stadium and go home, but when I got there I was alone «

« I signed into MSN Messenger hoping to speak to someone to see if anyone saw my game but no one was online

« Something like that started affecting me when you thought, » The match is over, I want to speak to someone, but no one is around « People only see us as professionals, but they forget that we are human too »

Denilson spent five years at Arsenal and played a total of 153 games during that time However, he doesn’t like to look back on those times

« I had big problems with it but didn’t mention it to anyone, I kept it all to myself »

Denilson even explained how his compatriot Brazilian at Arsenal, Gilberto Silva, once invited him to spend Christmas at his house with his family, but he declined as he did not want to be an « inconvenience »
