Gary Neville has identified England’s weak link after a 1-0 loss to Denmark in the Nations League.

Christian Eriksen scored from the penalty spot after Kyle Walker was adjudged to have fouled Thomas Delaney.

And the Manchester United captain can have no complaints after two yellow cards, the first a potential red in itself.

As questionable the decision to award a penalty was, Jordan Pickford could also shoulder some of the blame.

The Everton goalkeeper was in no man’s land when the ball came into the area and ludicrously out of position.

With his defenders in the process of dealing with the clearance, Pickford became unnecessarily involved – heightening panic.

He said in co-commentary: « The biggest doubt I have about England winning a tournament next year is individual errors. The backline and the goalkeeper. »

But he did look to defend Maguire, who is enduring a tough period of form at the moment.

« It sums up his last four to six weeks, » Neville said on Sky Sports. « Terrible time for him.

« I thought he was lucky with the first challenge. In between a yellow and a red.

« That one was scruffy play from him. That touch, really slack. And the follow-through as well.

« He made one mistake, don’t make the second. The touch lets him down and that follow-through. He’s got nowhere to go with it, the Spanish referee. »

However, Gareth Southgate was full of praise for his side and insisted he was proud of the performance.

He said: « I thought we were excellent with 11 men and causing them all sorts of problems down our right-hand side.

« The sending off alters everything and the penalty – it’s a foul on Kyle Walker and I don’t see the foul at all. The less said the better.

« We showed resilience and showed a great example of how to play with 10 pragmatically, and when to press.

« Their keeper made an amazing save to keep it at 1-0. I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in the last 10 days, they are learning and improving.
