The Coroners report states that Frawley began treatment for his mental health in June 2014 after being under stress after retiring as a coach in Richmond in 2004 and then even more as CEO of the AFL Coaches Association / p>

“He had a significant set of depressive symptoms, including significant insomnia, depressed ruminants, relative anhedonia, self-blame, amotivation, dysfunction, and episodic passive suicidality,” the report reads

“He also engaged in bad choices and behaviors that led to conflict in his marriage”

“For his family, Mr Frawley would lie in bed all week and be extremely needy, but he could put on a brave” public face “and appear to be functioning normally,” the report reads

Frawley’s mental health began to wane in 2019 after he cleared his medication in December 2018

“As of around April 2019, she (Anita) found that he was becoming increasingly unpredictable and starting to eat and drink excessively, Mr. Frawley stopped showing up with his friends on scheduled bike rides, and became of his own needs with little Consumed with obvious consideration for his family, “the report reads

“At the end of June 2019, Mr. Frawley’s decision making was still erratic and his personality had changed. He became even more selfish and had gained about 25 kilograms

“He avoided his family’s Christmas party in July and preferred to spend the time with an AFL team in the country he had coached”

His doctor stated that “Mr. Frawley relapsed his depressed state because he stopped taking all medication and stopped treatment because he felt” bulletproof “”

Frawley last saw his doctor on Jan. Seen with his wife in the days of his return from a trip to Hong Kong on September 9, 2019

“Mr. Frawley admitted having episodic dark thoughts as he contemplated his marriage, but vehemently denied any active suicidal intent or plan,” the report reads

“Mr. Frawley declined to be admitted to hospital to treat his poor sleep and general mental health

“The following weekend, Mrs. Frawley told her husband that they needed to take a break and that he would have to move out for a while to give himself some space. Notwithstanding that, Mrs. Frawley felt he was apparently fine

“On Sunday the 8th September 2019, Mr. Frawley celebrated his birthday with friends and family over a birthday dinner and seemed happy to spend quality time with them ”

On 9 On September 1st, Frawley rescheduled an appointment from his doctor from morning to afternoon

He was found at 1:40 pm by a passerby from Victoria Police who estimated that the car was traveling at a speed of at least 132 km / h at the time of the accident

The coroner noted that CTE was “potentially contributing” to the depression Frawley suffered from, but the extent of its effects cannot be inferred due to the need for more research in the area

“Although CTE has long been associated with psychological symptoms such as depression and aggression, it has not been found to have a strong causal relationship with suicide,” noted the Mental Health Investigator

“Since CTE can only be diagnosed post mortem, it is impossible to determine when CTE began and whether this coincided with changes in mood or behavior”

“Like many professional soccer players, Mr. Frawley began his soccer career in his early years and likely experienced head trauma before his personality was well established,” wrote coroner Paresa Spanos

“This, coupled with the inability to diagnose CTE before death, confuses assessments of CTE’s contribution to personality, behavior, cognitive deficits, or mood disorders

“Prior to discovering the CTE and implementing current AFL policies and procedures, Mr. Frawley retired from professional football to minimize the effects of concussions and recurrent subconcussive injuries

“There is strong consensus that further research on CTE is needed to improve understanding of the disease, its diagnosis, and prevention or at least minimizing the effects of CTE in AFL players”

She recommended that the AFL “actively encourage” players to donate their brains to the Australian Sports Brain Bank after death to enable more research on CTE
