News – AU – AlphaTauri expects “crashes” but rapid progress from Tsunoda

AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost expects rookie driver Yuki Tsunoda to start “fairly quickly” in Formula 1 – even if with “some” falls “along the way

Along with the Haas duo Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, Tsunoda is one of three rookies this season

The 20-year-old Japanese driver made the leap into F1 after just one season in F2, in which he finished third overall and won the Anthoine Hubert Award as the best placed rookie

Commenting on his driver’s impressive résumé in junior racing, Tost said, “When he drove in the Japanese F4 championship, he was selected by Honda who backed him, and in 2019 he also became a Red Bull Junior driver

“He moved to Europe to compete in the F3 championship and ran in the F2 series in 2020

“We expect his learning curve to be pretty steep, so he should be able to get good performance pretty quickly

“Of course he will have a few falls, that’s part of the development program, but what is very special on his part is the vehicle controls, his strength at braking and his speed in fast corners

“If he continues his learning process, as he did in the tests at Imola and Abu Dhabi last year, we are sure to see some fantastic races”” ”

Last season, the Red Bull sister team scored over 100 points for the first time in its history, including Toro Rosso on the way to seventh place in the overall standings

AlphaTauri also scored the second victory in its history when Pierre Gasly won the Italian Grand Prix

Tost believes the Frenchman can teach Tsunoda a lot and adds: “Pierre is a very highly skilled driver and now has the experience to lead the team and for Yuki

“Every driver compares himself with his team-mate The better it is, the more you will be pushed to improve”

“Yuki can learn a lot from Pierre in all aspects such as comparing lap times, car setup and driving lines. This is all very important, especially on the tracks that are new to Yuki

“When you have a strong and experienced teammate, you can compare many different parameters to improve your own performance”
