News – AU – Australian Young Gun Alexei Popyrin saves four match points in an angry victory at the Australian Open

Up-and-coming local hero Alexei Popyrin saved up four match points to grab David Goffin in a massive surprise in the first round of the Australian Open

The 21-year-old Popyrin looked down late in the fourth set when Goffin ran 5-4 for the match

But the Australian saved two match points in this game and two more in the tiebreaker before he went up a gear in the decisive set against the ailing Belgian and won 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4/7)) , 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 in three hours and 43 minutes

It is a significant win in his young career when the 15th Goffin was a former Australian Open quarter-finalist

Popyrin only officially received his Open Wildcard last week after taking the calculated risk of skipping the qualifier in Doha

He is in 113th place in the world, but has reached up to 87 in the ATP ranking

The junior champion of the French Open 2017 has reached the third round in Melbourne Park in the last two years

Popyrin’s victory followed the inspiring victory of compatriot Chris O’Connell, who made it to the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career

O’Connell, a wild card in the men’s draw, beat the 37th Jan-Lennard Struff with 7: 6 (7: 2), 7: 6 (7: 5) and 6: 1
