News – AU – Beach volleyball stars boycott tournament due to bikini ban

The German beach volleyball stars Karla Borger and Julia Sude will boycott a tournament in Qatar next month because they are not allowed to wear bikinis on the pitch

Qatar is hosting the upcoming FIVB World Tour event, but strict rules for dressing on the pitch have hugged world champion silver medalist Borger and doubles partner Sude

“We are there to do our work, but are prevented from wearing our work clothes,” said Borger on Sunday to the radio station Deutschlandfunk

“This is really the only country and the only tournament where a government tells us how to do our job – we criticize that”

The Qatar Volleyball Federation responded to the news by stating that it is “committed to making all athletes feel welcome and comfortable at next month’s event””

“We want to make it clear that we do not require what athletes should wear at the event,” emphasized a statement

In a decision supported by the German volleyball association DVV, Borger and Sude told the magazine Spiegel over the weekend that they would “not follow” the rules imposed by the Qatari authorities and that they were planning to boycott the event completely

Borger said they would normally like to “adapt to any country” but that Qatar’s extreme heat would make gambling in more than bikinis unbearable

Borger also asked whether Qatar would be a suitable host country for such an event
