News – AU – Crowd Numbers Announced As Footy Fans Return To AFL Melbourne

AFL games in Melbourne will be booked to 50 percent when the preparatory games open the men’s calendar this coming weekend

Victoria’s long break without football ended when the AFLW season began four weeks ago in front of 6700 fans in Princes Park

The return will take off when an AFL clash between St Kilda and Carlton takes place

The MCG, in which there have been no fans at a football game since the grand finale in 2019, will be up to 50000 spectators when the home and away seasons on 18 March starts

Geelong’s GMHBA stadium, which will host a preseason game against Essendon next Saturday, has not yet received a final number of spectators

“Footy fans in Victoria were thrilled to return to the Games and we saw it with big numbers in the opening rounds of the AFLW season,” said AFL boss Gillon McLachlan

“We haven’t had such a large audience since the game in support of Bushfire Relief in Victoria last February Today’s announcement gives our players and fans a huge boost ahead of the season”

“Our team worked hard behind the scenes and planned several scenarios All of our venues will be ready to welcome fans back to the stands next month ”

The 50 percent decision is a clear jump compared to the 30 percent who are allowed to take part in the cricket boxing day test at the MCG

The AFL said that if ticket details are released soon, club members will be given priority All tickets will be digital

“Home clubs will have three priority groups that will receive priority sales, and it is up to each club how they divide their membership categories into the groups (including reserved seating and general admission members),” the league said

“External club members also receive priority access after the members of the home club Should the capacity persist, a general public sale will be carried out ”

The MCG is expected to host the first three games of the home and away seasons, while two games are scheduled for Docklands

Richmond and Carlton are guaranteed to be 50Reaching 000 fans for the kick-off, as well as a clash between Collingwood and the Bulldogs

Melbourne and Fremantle end the MCG’s first round of action on Saturday afternoon with a game. Their clash in 2019 drew just 20211 fans to the ground
