CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga, Philippines – A fishing group yesterday called on the United Nations to declare Beijing’s controversial coastguard law “null and void” The law could be used against Filipino vessels on fishing expeditions in China-occupied waters in the West Philippine Sea

In effect on Jan 22, the Coast Guard Law expressly authorizes the Chinese Coast Guard to shoot non-Chinese ships entering Beijing-claimed areas in the South China Sea

In a statement, the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) said Beijing’s recent legislation was “undisputedly an act of aggression” against countries that hold China’s claim to almost all of the South China Sea, including 80 percent of the western Philippines , question the sea

Pamalakaya said the law was a “total disregard” of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, or UNCLOS, which had already ruled in favor of the Philippines’ claim over the West Philippine Sea and invalidated China’s historic claim by nine lines

“We humbly appeal to the United Nations to take decisive action in this matter by declaring the Coast Guard Act null and void, as it not only violates international law of the sea, but also endangers the livelihoods and security of the applicant nations” respective fishermen, “said Pamalakaya chairman Fernando Hicap

Pamalakaya also urged the international community to “jointly denounce China’s militarization and aggression in the South China Sea” ”

“This militarization should affect not only the applicant countries, but also the international community. It is high time for every country, applicants and non-applicants in the South China Sea to unite and put external pressure on China and the freedom of navigation and freedom of the to preserve innocent passage in international waters, ”said Hicap
