News – AU – Fyfe urges wounded dock workers to be adaptable

Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe says it is critical that his team rise to the challenge as the AFL club’s injury list grows to huge proportions

The Docker will not have at least nine first-choice players available when they play GWS at the Optus Stadium on Sunday, with attack and defense being particularly decimated

Main defenders Joel Hamling (ankle) and Alex Pearce (knee) suffer serious injuries while fellow campaigners Stephen Hill, Griffin Logue and Tobe Watson are out with hamstring problems

Key striker Rory Lobb will be out with a knee injury about half the season, while Michael Walters (thigh), Mitch Crowden (calf), Bailey Banfield (ankle) and Liam Henry (calf) will be absent from the attack
Fremantle manager Justin Longmuir debuted Ruckman Lloyd Meek last week and defenseman Heath Chapman will make his debut on Sunday

Chapman is one of four changes on the team this week Nathan Wilson, Michael Frederick and Sean Darcy are all ready to return

Connor Blakely was dropped after the Dockers lost 22 points to Melbourne last week, and history suggests they will struggle to reach the final if they go to 0 with a loss to GWS: 2 fall

Fyfe was optimistic about his team’s hopes for the summer final and said it was important to adapt to injury challenges

“A month ago there were so many reasons to be excited about what this team could achieve in 2021,” Fyfe wrote in an online letter to fans

“These challenges are expected to arise over the course of a season and it is critical that we rise to this challenge and adapt our system to everyone in the park”

The Giants also have a number of key players on their injury list, led by former Docker Jesse Hogan (Quad)

Lachie Whitfield (Liver) has not set a schedule on his return, while Adam Kennedy (shoulder) and Braydon Preuss (shoulder) will miss more than half of the season

The Giants have regained Brent Daniels goal from injury and recalled the inexperienced Zach Sproule for his first game of the season
