News – AU – Guarrotxena plays as United Trounce Bulls

Ballarat is a long way from Bilbao but Spanish importer Iker Guarrotxena was at home when he led Western United to a 4-1 statement win over A-League newcomers Macarthur FC

Macarthur’s Spanish duo Benat Etxebarria and Markel Susaeta have more successful résumés, but it was United’s own Basque commitment – which never appeared in La Liga with Athletic Bilbao – that brought their name to the fore on Saturday night

Guarrotxena opened the game in 26 Minute with a wonderful solo effort and then became the creator of Besart Berisha’s Tap-In at halftime In the second half, Dylan Pierias and Berisha rounded off the goals

“At the end of the day, when (Guarrotxena) runs into players and runs forward, you have the freedom you want,” said coach Mark Rudan

“You want to shove someone in, you slide in, you want to run and drive with the ball, you drive

“You want to shoot from 40 yards like he did today – that’s an exaggeration – you shoot

For his first A-League goal, Guarrotxena played a one-two with Steven Lustica, then shot past Etxebarria and shot a low shot into the lower corner

In the 45 Minute, Guarrotxena casually turned the ball on and rolled a lofty ball across the field to Diamanti

The United skipper drew an inventory of aspiring Bulls goalkeeper Adam Federici and cool Berisha coolly

The Bulls came to life at halftime, and Matt Derbyshire, Extebarria and James Meredith all had shots on goal

Then, in 54 Minute, Diamanti slipped through a ball to get Pierias to turn on the afterburners and United’s third – on his 21st minute Birthday – could catch Meredith suffered a suspected groin injury in the pursuit

United secured the result 12 minutes later when Guarrotxena took a nice note in traffic and rolled a close-range shot onto the post, with Berisha on hand to bury the rebound

Berisha’s second goal was his 138th A-League goal that took him past Rod Brown to second place on the all-time Australian top scorer list, just behind Damian Mori (240)

Derbyshire went in the 91st Minute home, but it was no consolation for Macarthur who missed the chance to consolidate second place

“We started well in the second half, we had some chances, but they are difficult to get past and it is also (a) threat in transition,” said Macarthur coach Ante Milicic

“They were very clinical, they took their chances and in the end it wasn’t our day”

Milicic left the line of contact before full-time – missing Derbyshire’s goal – but later made it clear that he needed the bathroom and congratulated United Bank before leaving
