The front page of the New York Times revealed the dire human cost of the coronavirus pandemic in the US

A simple but powerful image that spans almost the entire page shows dots representing a life lost to coronavirus

There are almost 500000 points on the page – which means more Americans were killed by COVID-19 than on the battlefields of World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War combined

“Every death has left countless grievers, a ripple effect of loss that has gripped cities and towns. Every death has left an empty space in churches across America: a bar stool that a regular was sitting on, one side of a bed, in he hadn’t slept, a kitchen-cum-living-room without a cook, “read the newspaper

“The living are in the midst of empty spaces that were once occupied by their spouses, parents, neighbors and friends – the nearly 500000 dead coronaviruses ”

According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessment at the University of Washington, by Jan. June another 91000 Americans die from the disease – and there are further concerns about the spread of new mutations

“It’s awful. It’s historic. We haven’t seen anything like it in more than 100 years since the 1918 pandemic influenza,” said Anthony Fauci, chief medical officer of US President Joe Biden, on NBC’s Meet The Press

“It’s something breathtaking when you look at the numbers, almost unbelievable, but it’s true”

There is hope for Americans, however, as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to decline, and the country’s vaccination efforts gain momentum

More than 42 so far, according to CDC data, 8 million Americans have received at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine

More than 178 million people have been fully vaccinated which is approximately 55 percent of the US population

After the first COVID-19 death was announced in the US in February 2020, it took about three months to hit the 100000, during a first wave that hit New York particularly hard

But as the outbreak increased in the United States, the pace of deaths picked up and the death toll reached 400 in the last month000, in part due to holiday gatherings

Dr Fauci noted that the number of new infections every day had dropped sharply after the peak in January, but added that normal life may still be a long way off

“I think we’ll have a significant amount of normalcy by the end of the year,” said Dr Fauci in an appearance on CNN’s State Of The Union

Mr Biden said last week the vaccine delivery program was as complicated as the already intense challenges of producing them in large quantities quickly

“There has never been a logistical challenge as momentous as what we try, but we can make it,” he said

According to Biden, his goal for the first 100 days of his presidency is to give a million shots per day for a total of 100 million, with a current average of 1.7 million shots per day, easily surpassing it

As the US death toll is approaching 500000, Mr Biden said he did not want to make firm predictions about when the crisis will be slowed

However, he said 600 million cans – enough to supply two cans to most of the country – are expected to be ready by the end of July
