McAvaney, 67, won’t be in the comments box for the 2021 AFL season with Channel 7 after deciding it was the right time to step back

To date, McAvaney has collected 1,000 AFL games and has played a total of 20 Grand Finals over the course of his career, which began in 1978

“I felt like I had reached a point in my career where I had to reduce my workload,” Hold told 7 NEWS

“I will miss it tremendously Just imagine if Richmond and Carlton run out of there on round one and the ball ricochets off I’ll climb a wall somewhere”

McAvaney’s announcement today means that the Richmond-Geelong Grand Final was officially his last as an AFL caller last year and is expected to continue his horse racing and Olympics commitments

His announcement to step down from his AFL commitments has received multiple acclaim from fans on social media
