Michael Johnsen made a statement saying he was “confident any investigation will reveal I am an innocent party” after the NSW parliament heard that a government MP was accused of being a sex worker having raped

Michael Johnsen, MP for the NSW Nationals, has announced that he will take “effective immediately” leave after a Labor MP told the state parliament that a government politician she did not name allegedly had a sex worker in the country in 2019 Blue Mountains raped

Mr Johnsen, the Nationals MP for the Supreme Hunter’s seat, brought up the allegation on Wednesday evening, saying he was innocent and would cooperate fully with the police

“I have spoken to the NSW police voluntarily and will and will continue to work fully with their inquiries

Mr Johnsen said he had decided to step down “without admission” from his role as Parliamentary Secretary and to take leave “with immediate effect for a limited period of time”

His testimony came after Blue Mountains Labor MP Trish Doyle told the House of Commons that a MP allegedly raped a sex worker after she refused to consent to penetrative sex

She said it was alleged that the woman and the MP met at a “remote vantage point” in the Blue Mountains

“It is all the worse that this man who raped her is a member of the government of this chamber. His power and privileged position as a citizen make this fear, anger and hurt worse,” she said

NSW police confirmed that they were investigating allegations of sexual violence against a woman in the Blue Mountains in September 2019

“The matter was reported and referred to the squad in late September 2020 and has been investigated since then,” they said

Deputy Prime Minister and NSW National Team Chairman John Barilaro said Thursday that he requested and received Mr Johnsen’s resignation from that role as Parliamentary Secretary after learning of the allegation

“Mr Johnsen also agreed not to sit in the Nationals’ party room or in the joint party boom while the police investigation was ongoing,” Barilaro said in a statement
