The next campaign book for dungeons & Dragons in 5 The first edition is titled Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft May The 256-page volume includes 30 new and redesigned areas from the Ravenloft Multiverse packaged as micro-settings for your next campaign Each realm has its own villain for players to fight, as well as new and old heroes, to fight with

Fans of the popular “Curse of Strahd” campaign will know Ravenloft as the hideout of the vampire Strahd von Zharovich, but it’s also the name of an expansive campaign environment that was released in the 1990s. Van Richten’s guide will guide the many areas through The mists are scattered outside Strahd’s Valley of Barovia, detailed and even with guides on how to create your own Realm of Terror. There are plenty of additional options for creating characters tied to these areas, as well as a brand new 20-page adventure called The House of Lament

“I’m a huge fan of everything horror-related,” said Wes Schneider, lead game designer at Wizards of the Coast and lead designer on Van Richten’s guide elements like mummy lords, cosmic horrors and urban legends to more D&D- Tables ”

Similar to the upcoming Candlekeep Mysteries, the book will have multiple authors including the new lead designer at Wizards, Amanda Hamon (formerly Kobold Press), Cassandra Khaw (nothing but blackened teeth), Molly Ostertag (The Witch Boy) and K Storm Bradford (The Copper Scarab)

During a press preview, Schneider and Hamon from Wizards were on site to test out some of the 30 areas on offer, including Barovia, where the original Curse of Strahd campaign takes place, but also many more

Dementlieu, ruled by the cruel Saidra díHonaire, is a twisted version of the fairytale genre Lamordia is home to Dr Viktra Mordenheim chasing her escaped meat golem Elise across the country Falkovnia has a new ruler named Vladeska Drakov and has been reinterpreted as a realm on the verge of a zombie apocalypse. There is Kalakeri, which is inspired by Indian folklore and mythology, where the Darklords Ramya, Arijani and Reeva each fight for control. The last realm to be teased is Valachan, where the Dark Lord Chakuna relentlessly hunts player characters for the sport

Players have more than magical items and powerful spells at their disposal. There are other powerful non-player characters scattered across the fog to aid them on their travels, including the curse of Strahds Esmerelda d’Avenir, the mighty Weathermay Foxgrove Twins and the traveling detective Alanik Ray

The book also has a long section on setting safe boundaries so everyone is comfortable at the table

“A horror RPG is much more personal and much longer [than a movie or TV show] There is also no off switch, “said Schneider during the preview event.” If someone feels uncomfortable at the table and it turns out that the whole story is secretly about the worst that has ever happened in your life, what to do You with it? How do you avoid getting into this situation, how do you get out and how do you make sure that your entire playgroup supports these things? “

Van Richten’s Handbook also includes new options for players called Dark Presents These traits can help connect player characters with the setting and their themes. There are two new subclasses to experiment with, including the College of Spirits, which allows players to build a bard who can change reality by telling scary stories narrated meanwhile, warlocks can derive their powers from a powerful undead patron – which may complicate the story by choosing the villain in control of the realm their respective campaign is set in

The book will also feature three new potential character lines: Dhampir, Hexblood, and Reborn. All three were the subject of a recent test package from Unearthed Arcana Schneider said that while they mechanically act as races, they can also be something a character into passes over in the course of an adventure

“If [] you have had experiences with vampires or witches,” said Schneider, “and it makes sense to steer the story in a direction that fundamentally changes the foundation of your character These lineages give you a chance to explore ”

Cultural sensitivities are currently playing a huge role in tabletop games, and especially role-playing games. Last year, the publisher Wizards of the Coast apologized for racist stereotypes in its modern materials and promised to do better in the future. Content warnings will now be in its rear catalog, much of which is available digitally. These include the 1997 Domains of Dread published by TSR, which is most similar to Van Richten’s guide to Ravenloft

“Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender biases that were common in American society at the time,” the Domains of Dread content warning on DriveThruRPGcom reads. “Those representations were and are false at the time wrong today ”

To avoid repeating past mistakes, Wizards said it worked closely with cultural advisors on the Van Richten guide. Most importantly, the wizards emphasized that this campaign book was made for all ages

“We understand that a lot of people these days are playing with their kids, with younger gamers,” said Schneider. “Horror doesn’t have to be an R-rated movie. It’s not just for adults. You don’t have to bring your parents with you to see this D&D experience of seeing horror can be cartoons like Scooby Doo or like the old Ghostbusters cartoon. Such things have horror elements and are at the same time action, adventure, mystery and exciting stories. It doesn’t just have to be bloody and visceral ”

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft can now be pre-ordered on Amazon, via D&D Beyond and on Roll20. An alternative cover with Esmerlda d’Avenir and a special metallic finish is available in local game stores
