Progressive lawmakers have put pressure on President Joe Biden to cancel student loan debt after saying he was unwilling to write off as much as $ 50000 per student at a CNN City Hall last week
In a series of social media posts and media spots, members of the progressive lawmakers squad group said Biden had to “cancel student debts” to divert arguments that the policy would benefit largely privileged Americans
They also said the move would help close the “racial wealth gap” and provide much-needed help amid the pandemic to those who have taken out student loans but haven’t graduated
Speaking to MSNBC on Sunday night, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) argued that Biden had “absolute” authority to cancel student debts through an executive order, claiming low-income households would benefit. p>
“President Biden must cancel student debts through executive action,” she added, “50$ 000 will go a long way toward an equitable recovery from this pandemic “
On Thursday, write a letter to the Washington Post condemning the comments of a newspaper columnist, Sens Schumer and Warren, saying student debt relief would “vastly improve racial justice,” arguing that many borrowers did not have college degrees, which makes it difficult for them to pay the debt
