Let’s start on a positive note and list the good things about the Samsung Chromebook 4 ($ 299) 99 as tested) The keyboard is decent and the 15-inch 6-inch display offers a full- HD resolution (1st920 x 1080 pixels) instead of the low resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, which is only tolerable in 116-inch Chromebooks beyond that, there’s not much going on beyond that, even if we get there: the Chromebook 4 is aimed at buyers who want a big-screen laptop on a budget, and although it’s at $ 199 would be okay, $ 100 is no longer fun. In terms of performance, performance, and quality, it’s just on a different planet from our Editors’ Choice winner, the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 worth $ 629

The $ 299 model shown here, the XE350XBA-K01US 99, is the most humble of three Chromebook 4 configurations, all with a 1080p non-touch screen and dual-core 11GHz Intel Celeron N4000 processor. It has 4GB of memory and 32GB eMMC Flash Storage A $ 349 Model 99 increases RAM to 6GB and storage to 64GB Flash while spending $ 37999 shrinks storage to 4GB but increases storage to 128GB (confuse not the 156-inch Samsung Chromebook 4 with the Samsung Chromebook 4, which has a much smaller 116-inch display and will be reviewed separately soon)

The Chromebook 4 has a silver gray aluminum lid (Samsung calls it “Platinum Titan”) but a thin plastic bottom. There’s moderate flex when you grip the screen corners and quite a bit when you press the keyboard deck 142 by 96 inches, bulky but slightly more compact than the Acer Chromebook 315 (08 by 15 by 101 inches) and at 3 is a fraction lighter75 against 397 pounds

With just 32GB of storage, there’s less than 19GB available for your downloads and personal files, so you’ll likely be keeping documents in the cloud The keyboard follows the standard Chromebook layout (with lowercase letters on the keys, a consumer’s mark or classroom instead of the business model), with browser and system controls in the top row and a search / menu key instead of the Caps Lock key. Above the screen is a webcam and in the palm rest is a large touchpad with no buttons

On the left edge of the laptop there is a 5 Gbit / s USB 31 Type-C connection (suitable for the compact power supply unit) together with a microSD card slot and an audio jack.A second USB-C connection, a USB 30 The Type-A port and a security lock are on the right Bluetooth and 80211ac (Wi-Fi 5, not 6) Wireless are standard Without an HDMI port, you need to connect a USB-C DisplayPort dongle to connect an external monitor

Touchscreens have improved rapidly on Chromebooks since the latter gained access to Android apps However, the Chromebook 4 has a non-contact, glare-free display, the screen tilts almost all the way and the bezels are relatively thin, but it’s one of the worst on the market I’ve seen – the panel uses cheap, antique twisted Nematic (TN) instead of In-IPS technology (Plane Switching), so the colors are monotonous, pale and washed out, with poor off-center viewing angles

The peak brightness is fair, but the contrast is weak and the white background appears dingy. Fine details and the edges of letters are pretty sharp. As with most Chromebooks, you can choose between multiple scaled resolutions if you want screen elements to appear larger than at 1920 x 1080 (up to a jumbo of 960 x 540)

The keyboard is not illuminated It has a large palm rest and a hollow but acceptably snappy typing feel. Don’t look for home, end, page up or page down buttons or a number pad, although there may be room for them The large touchpad slides and types smoothly Firm pressure is required for a plastic click

The 720p webcam captures images that aren’t too dark, but are soft in the camera app and downright blurry in Google Duo The colors appear faint, as with all photos and videos on the low-quality screen. Bottom-mounted speakers produce a soft but tolerably clear sound There’s no bass, but you can see overlapping tracks

The Chromebook 4 is a lukewarm device that can open multiple browser tabs and stream videos, but it takes two or three seconds to launch an app or open an image for our benchmark charts, I have them with four others Consumer Chromebooks Compared The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 is our favorite in this category, though it’s an outlier here due to its higher price point and more powerful Core i5 processor. The Acer Chromebook 315 is a direct competitor as an inexpensive 156-inch screen entry, though an AMD A4-9120C is used instead of an Intel CPU

To see how the Chromebook 4 fares against other Celeron systems, I picked two from Lenovo, the 14-inch Chromebook IdeaPad 3 and the 11-inch, 6-inch Chromebook 3 that is at $ 169 cheapest of Gruppe99 (learn more about how we test laptops)

The first objective benchmarks we use are the venerable CrXPRT from Principled Technologies (a suite of simulated Chrome OS productivity apps) and the newer WebXPRT 3 (a browser-based test of HTML and JavaScript throughput)

The Samsung ousted the AMD A4-based Acer 315, but it was the slowest of the three Celeron laptops and is miles behind the Core i5 Spin 713

JetStream 2 is another performance test that we use.It combines 64 JavaScript and WebAssembly benchmarks to measure the suitability of a browser (in this case, the default Chrome) for advanced web applications

The result was the same on this test, although the Celerons basically finished three side by side The four economy Chromebooks get you through everyday productivity and browsing tasks, but aren’t a great choice for Android games or demanding apps. p>

We have added PCMark for Android Work 2 from UL0 test on our Chromebook regime. This test suite runs in a small smartphone-style window and mimics productivity processes ranging from text and image manipulation to data charts and video playback range

We don’t have a PCMark score for the Acer 315, but the others performed predictably, with the Core i5 Acer convertible far ahead of the Celeron systems

To test the battery life of a laptop, we’ll run a 720p video file with the screen brightness at 50%, volume at 100%, and wi-fi, with the keyboard backlight turned off, until the system exits when the internal storage runs out of the Chromebook is not big enough to record the video, we play it from an external SSD connected to a USB-C port

The 156-inch Chromebooks will get you through or nearly a day of work or school, but their plugless endurance is in a lesser league than the other machines

The Samsung Chromebook 4 is a laptop you can live with, but honestly, if you can get the extra cash on a Chromebook in the $ 500- $ 600 range – and you can’t there is a model with a smaller screen we rate higher

For those who insist on a 15, the Acer Chromebook 315’s 6-inch display is better – it’s definitely economy class, but it’s a touch panel with clearer IPS instead of TN technology – and its slightly slower AMD Processor is offset by more memory and a price tag that’s currently $ 50 less than the Samsung
