Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of 75-year-old Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments and the 77-year-old Cardinal Angelo Comastri, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and Pastor of the Vatican City State

While a new prefect of the worship parish was not announced when news of the retirements was published, the Pope appointed Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, 55) as the new Archpriest of the Basilica and his pastor for Vatican City

Cardinal Gambetti, whom the Pope elevated to the College of Cardinals in November, is a conventual Franciscan who has served as Minister General and Administrator of the Holy Monastery of St. Francis of Assisi since 2013. He was also Episcopal Vicar for the Pastoral Care of the Basilica of St. Francis and other places of worship overseen by the Conventual Franciscans in the diocese. He has degrees in mechanical engineering, theology and theological anthropology and is one of the youngest cardinals

Like bishops, cardinals must offer their resignation to the Pope when they turn 75. Cardinals can still vote in a conclave until they are 80

Cardinal Sarah, born on 15 June 1945 in Ourous, Guinea, was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments by Pope Francis in 2014

Although he has often been portrayed as a critic of Pope Francis, particularly because of the cardinal’s cautious stance towards accepting Muslim migrants into Europe and his traditional approach to the liturgy, Cardinal Sarah told people who will portray him as an opponent of Pope Francis used by the devil to split the church

“The truth is that the Church on earth is represented by the Vicar of Christ, that is, by the Pope, and whoever is against the Pope is ipso facto outside the Church,” said the cardinal in an interview in 2019

From 2010 to 2014 he was president of the Cor Unum Pontifical Council, an office that coordinated and promoted charitable donations and is now part of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. Before that, he was secretary of the Congregation for Evangelization for nine years of the peoples who oversee and care for Catholic dioceses and jurisdictions in mission areas

Cardinal Sarah came to the Vatican after serving as Archbishop of Conakry, Guinea for 21 years, including the last five years of the ruthless Marxist dictatorship of Ahmed Sekou Toure, then Archbishop Sarah is considered to be one of the few votes that are brave enough to defend freedom and promote human dignity

During his many years in the Vatican and at various synods, Cardinal Sarah has emphasized that the Catholic Church is not an agency for social services Her goal is to lead people to the God who is love, which can also be expressed through Catholic charity

He warned that Africa must “protect itself from the contamination” of increasingly popular Western ideas about family life and sexuality, saying it is undermining attempts to redefine the family, accept homosexual activities and promote abortion as a right the very fabric of the stable societies

Cardinal Comastri has been President of the Office responsible for the maintenance of St. Peter’s Church since 2005 and Archpriest of the Basilica since 2006. Before that, from 1996 he was Archbishop and Papal Delegate in charge of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Loreto
