News – PH – PBA: Calvin Abueva still on parole, says GAB

MANILA, Philippines – The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) issued a reminder Tuesday for veteran striker Calvin Abueva, who remains under parole following his trade with the Magnolia Hotshots

GAB chairman Baham Mitra emphasized that Abueva still has a six-month probationary period, even though he is now playing for a different team

Abueva’s professional license was reintroduced last year just before the PBA lifted their indefinite suspension of the embattled striker

“Even if he (Abueva) has switched to another team as a professional athlete licensed by the GAB, he must keep the agreed and his commitment to the board of directors, which was the basis for the reinstatement”Mitra said in a statement

“He’s a professional athlete and the youth look up to him We expect him to set an example for the younger generation,” he added

GAB reached out to Abueva through Magnolia team manager Alvin Patrimonio to remind him that he must continue to comply with the conditions set by the regulator as part of the lifting of his suspension

Abueva was acquired by Magnolia last week in a blockbuster deal that Phoenix Super LPG got Chris Banchero in return

While Abueva was playing for the Fuel Masters, Phoenix Super LPG team manager Paolo Bugia and coach Topex Robinson agreed to sign a commitment in which Abueva will receive the assistance necessary to meet the requirements of his professional practice as Athlete

GAB said this company has now been “purposely and voluntarily” taken over by Magnolia management, led by Patrimonio and trainer Chito Victolero

However, he was unable to attend last January because he had to take time out for a more pressing family matter
