The actress and artist Solenn Heussaff apologized on Thursday morning, April 4 March after criticizing a photo she posted to promote an upcoming art exhibition

“I’ve thought a lot about the comments you guys left on the photo I posted I know it has sparked some debate and there have been both good and bad attitudes, while I appreciate the encouragement given by some but I also want to apologize to those I hurt, “she said in a post

In the controversial photo, which has since been deleted from Solenn’s social media reports, the painter is sitting cross-legged on a wooden chair with a massive painting of leaves and plants behind her and one of her custom rugs below her

The setting? What appears to be one of Metro Manila’s many impoverished urban communities The photo was criticized online, with many users pointing out that, whether she intended it or not, Solenn used poverty as the “aesthetic” for her exhibit

Others also pointed to the stark contrast of the shanties and the usual cost of Solenn’s work. Earlier editions of carpets designed by the artist cost up to 68000 pesetas each. The minimum daily wage in Metro Manila is limited to P537

Solenn explained that she “wanted to shoot it in a typical street we drive past every day” All of my pictures are about the people we see”Not the rich or the poor, but the people for whom they are Humanity The choice of painting was to show the environmental side The abundance and balance of what life was, but also growth and hope,” she said

She said that following the comments on social media, she “became more sensitive to different perspectives on my choice of location”

“It was not my intention to hurt or offend anyone It was my hope that I could use my voice and art to show the reality of Filipinos This is the heart and inspiration of all of my old and new Images I didn’t want to romanticize the poverty of the everyday pinoy or the resilience we naturally have I was really hoping to honor our people by being honest about the type of life many Filipinos live in today and to show that Filipinos deserve better, “she added

Solenn initially defended the photo, responding to comments by insisting that it was “not poverty porn” and that if they “read the caption and see the whole show” critics would understand what she was trying to say / p>

Solenn, 35, is a Franco-Filipino artist who has since pursued a career in Filipino entertainment on both television and film. She also launched Solenn Manila, a lifestyle brand that curated items from her favorite local brands offers – Rapplercom
