Carlisle United are hoping to weather the frost to face Leyton Orient this afternoon

The Blues were in Brunton Park course last night after announcing a 2:30 p.m. kick-off to kick off the game with sub-zero temperatures forecast

United will hope the covers have proven effective and that Chris Beech’s team can return to action in a game that has already been postponed twice this season

If the game continues, it will be the rarity of midweek afternoon league football for the Blues, who are on the hunt for commercials and desperate to catch up on a number of postponed games

United Secretary Sarah McKnight said on the club website last night: “We had a referee from Blackpool this afternoon and he was taking a look at the field with [co-head coach] Gav Skelton and [Groundsman] Dave Mitchell

“It was in very good shape and since the weather forecast for tomorrow will be similar, it made sense for us to look into the possibility of an afternoon start with the EFL, especially if Leyton Orient is heading north today

“The last thing any club would want is another shift, especially with free slots during the week until the end of the season, and the EFL really got that

“We know it is extremely rare for games to start earlier on weekdays like this However, given the current weather conditions, this makes perfect sense and gives us the best chance of playing this important game ”

United admitted that the earlier kick-off time may “not be ideal” for fans wanting to watch the evening game on iFollow

“But we believe our fans will understand the reasons for the decision and the importance of us playing our games,” said media officer Andy Hall

“Anyone who bought a matchpass but can no longer watch the game should send an email to ifollow @ eflcom and a refund will be issued,” Hall added

United also quoted an EFL spokesman as saying, “The game was reorganized at the request of the participating clubs in order to have the game at a challenging time to plan the game

“A kick off in the afternoon offers the best chance that the field is playable, since the temperatures drop as soon as the daylight goes out” ”
