News – UK – Joey Barton named Bristol Rovers’ new manager



Barton left Fleetwood Town in January and was named to Memorial Stadium Rovers fired Paul Tisdale in early February after the results were poor Barton’s first responsible game is on Tuesday against Wigan

The West Country Club opened on Jan. February sacked former coach Paul Tisdale and is just two points outside the relegation zone of League One after losing to Gillingham on Saturday

Barton has signed a contract until 2023 at Memorial Stadium and will take over the team for the game against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening

Clint Hill and Andy Mangan have appointed Barton’s coaching team as deputy managers and First-team coaches attached, while current coaches Kevin Maher and Jack Mesure will all be part of Barton’s backroom staff

Commenting on the appointment, Club President Wael Al Qadi said: “We are delighted to welcome Joey to Bristol Rovers and look forward to working closely with him to advance our football club.

“Joey’s experience in the game goes hand in hand with his passion for coaching and delivering results, which made him a great candidate for the role

“His experience at Fleetwood has given him a good understanding of the league and has demonstrated his ability to deliver results and get the most out of the players he works with

“We are confident that he can continue the continued development of the younger players who come through the ranks and speak to him I know his ambitions are in line with what we want to achieve as a football club

“I would like to wish Joey, the staff and the players the best of luck in the upcoming games as we try to consolidate our security in Sky Bet League One and build it for the future”

Barton joined the management team with Fleetwood in 2018, but parted ways with the 38-year-old in January of this year

Fleetwood reached the League One play-offs under Barton in the 2019-20 season – where they lost to Wycombe in the semifinals – and he had them in tenth place earlier this year but left them after poor form win one of his last eight games
