News – UK – Lawmakers, Far Rockaway Residents Concerned Over Cost Reduction Proposals in St John’s Episcopal Hospital

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – cutting beds, services and staff – these are three suggestions for cutting costs at St John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway

St John’s Episcopal Hospital is the only hospital on the peninsula serving the Rockaways and Five Towns community

The 257-bed facility admitted its first COVID-19 patient from Queens last year and was so inundated with infected patients that more beds had to be created

“A year later, this is a thank you that we no longer need you,” nurse Iona Folkes told Alice Gainer at CBS2

The state health department and a consulting firm presented the hospital administrators with various options for reducing costs. The most drastic would be to reduce the hospital to 15 beds

Another option would be to eliminate obstetrics and limit beds. The number of staff, currently more than 1000, would be reduced

“Yes, we are facing a crisis with the budget, with the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean your poorest communities aren’t earning less”Our zip code shouldn’t determine the quality of health care they receive,” she said,

“They’re sentencing us to death,” said Johnson. “What if we have another pandemic? What if something else comes up? What if we have another natural disaster, like Superstorm Sandy? “

“The Rockaways have had it on their chin for generations,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “The people of Rockaways need more health care, not less”

“We gathered together in 2012 when they shut down Peninsula Hospital, and we all said as a church here in Rockaway that a hospital is what St John’s wasn’t enough, ”said councilor Mike Scala

“The Ministry of Health has worked with the management of St John’s Episcopal for several years to drive improved health outcomes and access to the Far Rockaways In 2019, St John’s Episcopal has reached an agreement with Mount Sinai South Nassau to collaborate on how they can achieve this goal.As part of this process, Mount Sinai selected and hired a health consultancy firm called TonyKorf Partners to help develop strategic options for The Department did not ask SJE to implement any of these models and would need approval from SJE’s board of directors to do so

The department looks forward to working with the management of St John’s Episcopal, along with the workers, elected officials and other stakeholders, is examining these options, among others, to find a solution that works for all parties. In the meantime, the state continues to provide significant operational support to St John’s Bishop

Operational support from the state for St John’s Episcopal is up 50% since 2019 and now totals $ 60 million per year. State operational support to all safety net hospitals has nearly doubled since 2019 and is projected to exceed $ 1 billion in the state’s next fiscal year ”

CBS2 also reached out to consulting firm ToneyKorf Partners, LLC but received no response
