News – UK – SFA with questions after assistant referee admission should be isolated

The Scottish Football Association is preparing for some tough questions after admitting that an assistant referee could officiate in a game when he should have been self-isolating

Graeme Stewart started Saturday’s Scottish Premiership game between Hibernian and Hamilton despite being in close contact with his assistant referee David Roome, who had returned a positive test on Wednesday

Stewart and Roome officiated together with referee Bobby Madden in Greece last Sunday. Madden was pulled out of office late in the Ross County’s game against Celtic on Sunday night when the mistake became apparent

Describing the incident as a “breakdown in the internal process”, the SFA admitted that Stewart’s appointment violated the Scottish Government’s rules for self-isolating close contacts, despite Stewart and Madden subsequently returning negative tests

SFA chief Ian Maxwell said in a statement on Sunday evening: “I apologized to Hibernian and Hamilton Academical tonight for the unnecessary risk of having an assistant referee at a game when he should have isolated himself, how much.” it may be tempered by two negative tests leading up to the game

“As part of an internal review, I asked the relevant departments to ensure that we were maintaining the highest standards of compliance relevant to Scottish Government protocols”

Maxwell confirmed that “no players or team members involved in the game (on Saturday) have been identified as close contacts with Graeme”

Hamilton declined to make an immediate comment on the matter while no one was available at Hibernian on Sunday night
