The SUEZ CANAL EGYPT is currently closed to all ships after a mega container ship sailing to the Netherlands was turned sideways into the waterway earlier today

The 400 m long cargo ship Ever Given, which flies the Panamanian flag, ran aground and turned into the channel as it sailed north towards the Mediterranean

The canal, which was built in 1869 to connect the Mediterranean with the Red Sea, is the shortest sea route from Europe to Asia

It was blocked in both directions for several hours even though some Egyptian ships tried to free the ship that is en route from Yantian China to Rotterdam

The Shipping Tracker website Vessel Finder shows Ever Given between either side of the canal, surrounded by smaller Egyptian boats

A number of waiting ships are also waiting in the channel and waiting in the Red Sea to the south Dozens of others are waiting at points in the Channel and in the Mediterranean to the north

A picture posted on social media shows the ship stuck in the canal while other ships on either side cannot pass

It is currently unknown how long it will take to free the ship and clear the canal
