Jamey Rootes, who gave Cleveland fans a thumbs up in November, worked for the Texans for two decades, most recently as president in charge of business operations

The long-rumored departure of Texas President Jamey Rootes became official on Wednesday morning when he informed his staff of his resignation, ending more than 20 years of working with the organization

Rootes was hired by late owner Bob McNair and helped make Texans one of the most financially profitable franchises in the NFL

As team president, Rootes oversaw the business and administrative side of the organization that became one of the most successful in professional sports From 2002 to 2019, every game at NRG Stadium was sold out before COVID-19 forced limited ticket sales last season

“I think the organization is in a great place from a business standpoint,” Rootes said Wednesday morning. “We have a great leadership team I thought it was time to do something different

Rootes, 54, was the president and general manager of the Columbus Crew for Major League Soccer when team owner Lamar Hunt recommended him to McNair

More than a year before the Texans played their first season in 2002, McNair hired Rootes as the team’s senior vice president of marketing to stimulate interest in the expansion team in the Houston business community

In 2005, McNair promoted Rootes to president, a position he held until he stepped down at Cal McNair, who has led the team since his father lost his battle with cancer in November 2018

“I love Cal like a brother,” said Rootes. “This idea (resignation) is not new to me. As Bob’s health began to deteriorate, I felt it was important that the organization had stability during that window when Bob died , I felt I owe it to Cal to be here ”

Last season, Rootes sparked controversy when he fired popular Vice President of Communications Amy Palcic during the season and received a negative response locally and nationally

Over the years, Rootes was part of the team’s search committee that recommended Bob and Cal McNair new coaches and general managers

Since Rootes was promoted to team president, Texans have received multiple awards on the organization’s business page. In 2020, Rootes penned a book called “The Winning Game Plan: A Proven Leadership Game Book For Continuing Success”

Rootes said he plans to move out at least six months to spend more time with his family. He will continue to promote his book, teach at the University of Houston, and speak publicly

“I want to allow enough time to decide what is best for me in the future,” he said. “That (resignation) is difficult because of the people. They are special to me. I feed the energy of our fans, ours Employees and our customers and will miss them ”

Roote’s longtime right-hand man, senior vice president of corporate development Greg Grissom, will oversee operations until a new president is hired. Grissom has been with the Texans since 2002
