News – USA – UFC’s Phil Hawes apologizes for wishing COVID comment on Chris Weidman, Uriah Hall

Phil Hawes retracted a comment wishing one of his UFC middleweight colleagues would sign COVID-19 for their potential benefit

Hawes survived a third round climb from Nassourdine Imavov to escape with a majority decision win in their middleweight bout at UFC Fight Night 185 in Las Vegas on Saturday as Hawes spoke about in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping As for what he would like next, he said he would stand up for either Chris Weidman or Uriah Hall if either of them came on Nov. April is eliminated from his UFC 261 fight

“I know Weidman and Uriah – what’s his name? – Hall, you got that thing,” Hawes said. “Hopefully someone’s getting COVID or something. Push me in there whenever that is”

“I hope people get COVID so they argue,” Bisping said with a laugh, “I like your style”

During his post-fight press conference, Hawes apologized and explained what he wanted to convey

“I apologize, I didn’t want it to come out that way,” Hawes said. “I was just saying how crazy everything in the world is If something happened I would slide in. I would never wish anyone in the world COVID or any disease. I apologize. I got my foot in my mouth for that and I apologize. I will never say that again ”

Weidman, a former UFC middleweight champion, and Hall were originally booked to meet at UFC 258 last week, but the fight was pushed back after Weidman tested positive for the coronavirus in January in an interview with Submission Radio earlier this month told Weidman the severity of his illness, which is responsible for nearly half a million deaths in the U.S.

“The first few days were definitely pretty bad,” Weidman said. “For about three days I had a fever, body ache, severe headache, and it just kind of sucked. And after that I just felt tired. I would get this headache by accident Yes, well I had to take about two weeks off, and now I feel fine and in shape again … “I’ve also lost 12 pounds. I ate soups and all. My appetite wasn’t that big and I lost 12 pounds throughout the process”

Hawes, 32, a 2020 Dana White’s Contender Series alum, has six wins and starts 2-0 at UFC on Saturday night. He won his advertising debut last October with an 18-second knockout by Jacob Malkoun at UFC 254
