News – USA – USPS chooses Oshkosh Defense for future electric mail vans

USPS is moving into the future with the Wisconsin-based military vehicle maker, and its decision concludes a six-year selection process

The United States Postal Service has made a selection for its future mail vans – and they’re going electric On Tuesday, Oshkosh Defense announced that the USPS has selected the Wisconsin-based military vehicle manufacturer to build the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) USPS placed a 10-year $ 482 million contract with the company to manufacture the new mail wagons

Oshkosh will not only help the USPS go electric with battery-electric mail trucks, but also plans to include “fuel efficient vehicles with low-emission internal combustion engines” in the contract, however, it is unclear what purpose these will serve, especially given the promise made by President Joe Biden, Switching Federal Fleet to 100% Electric Vehicles Oshkosh did not immediately return a request for comment

The selection process has remained top secret with a handful of competitors, including Lordstown Motors (formerly Workhorse) and a Turkish company called Karsan. The recent order for Biden by the Biden government tightens the rules for buying more US-made goods so that Karsan was apparently out of the running Oshkosh’s original proposal did not include an electric postman, which seemed to get Lordstown to a good place, and Oshkosh clearly best met the needs of the USPS

Oshkosh’s prototype is actually based on a Ford Transit Ford has confirmed in the past that it was working with Oshkosh on the USPS mail car prototype, but it’s not clear how the vehicle has performed over the past few years, Ford Leaned declined to comment on his work with Oshkosh and the NGDV program

We’ll have a lot to learn about the future postmen, but this is a big day for USPS The agency’s current fleet of Grumman Long Life Vehicles is well past its expiration date and production of the new mail cars is slated to begin in 2023 as Oshkosh completed the decade-long order to build 50000 to 165000 vehicles starts
