Birmingham University and Bentley Motors have launched a project to provide a sustainable source of rare earth magnets for the brand’s electric and hybrid vehicles

The £ 2 RaRE (Rare Earth Recycling for E-Machine) project, funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and carried out in collaboration with Innovate UK, includes six partners who are the first end-to-end supply chain for Recycling will build rare earth magnets in the UK

Rare earth magnets are becoming increasingly important in the transition to a low carbon economy, but less than one percent of these magnets are being recycled

The three-year RaRE project builds on technologies developed by Professor Allan Walton and Professor Emeritus Rex Harris of the University’s Magnetic Materials Group This is the UK’s only research group dedicated to the processing and recycling of durable rare earth magnetic materials

The technology – Hydrogen Processing of Magnetic Scrap (HPMS) – extracts rare earth metals from waste electronics by breaking them down into a powder that is separated from the remaining components

The technology was patented by the University of Birmingham Enterprise and licensed to HyProMag, a company founded by the Birmingham researchers. HyProMag has since received an investment from Mkango Resources which will fully fund HyProMag’s contribution to RaRE / p>

The project will develop a method of recycling magnets from computer hard drives to produce rare earth magnets for use in bespoke auxiliary motors and HyProMag will expand the recycling techniques developed at Birmingham University

The university will also provide casting alloys that HyProMag will mix with secondary materials to make the “sintered” magnets, which are formed by press molding the metal powders

In a statement, Nick Mann, Operations General Manager at HyProMag, said, “RaRE is an exciting project and a fantastic opportunity. With HyProMag’s recycling technologies, we can make NdFeB (neodymium-iron-boron) magnets with a much lower cost of embedded carbon than when using new goods and independently of the Chinese supply We are working closely with our major shareholder Mkango Resources to continue growing the business ”

Partners in the RaRE project include Unipart Powertrain Applications, Advanced Electric Machines Research and Intelligent Lifecycle Solutions, which preprocess computer hard disk drives to remove components with rare earth magnets
